Lunch Bunch
You are invited! Lunch Bunch will meet on Wednesday,
Dec. 12 at noon in the Gathering Place. You will enjoy a special, catered lunch and delectable dessert. The guest speaker for the day is Leslie Goddard. Her program is "Remembering Marshall Field's." For more than 150 years, Marshall Field and Co. reigned as Chicago's leading department store. This lavishly illustrated talk traces its beginning as a dry-goods store in 1852 into a world-class fashion and service trendsetter. Photographs, ads, postcards and memorabilia trace the store's cherished traditions - the Walnut Room Christmas tree, the State Street store's legendary window displays, and of course Frango Mints.
RSVP as soon as possible for this wonderful event. Call Nancy Elliott 469-6984 or church office 469-2007 no later than December 10. Donation for lunch is $8. |

You'll also hear how Christians are faithfully responding to this issue -- and what we can do to help. Following his talk, we'll have time for Q&A. Everyone is welcome -- and this is a great opportunity to bring a friend! |

Dear Church Family -
As we look forward to all the joys of the Advent/Christmas season just ahead, Bill and I wish for you all, days and weeks filled with the beauty of the presence of the Savior and precious hours spent with family and friends!
Many of you are aware that your leadership team for Jerusalem Journey would have expected to be highly visible and very busy among you by now recruiting players and crews, sprucing up scenery, costumes and planning publicity and outreach for Lent. We have been advised that with so much of the church staffing still in flux, that it would be best to wait past the bi-annual 2013 schedule as originally planned, continuing instead to evaluate the best time to consider the presentation of this First Pres ministry going forward. The "Journey's" shepherds support that perspective and look forward to further conversations at a more appropriate time with Pastor Chris and the Worship Ministry Team.
On a personal note, Bill and I are grateful for your kind expressions of concern for his health as we await more tests and a surgery date for his cancer and will continue to keep the staff apprised, all the while trusting in the comfort of the Spirit each day, the love of our Lord for all His children whatever their state, and the potential for God's healing in all things. Please keep us in your prayers.
With love and wishes to you for blessings in the year ahead,
Olivia Albert

Auto Donations for Bridge Communities Needed
Auto donations are urgently needed for families throughout DuPage County in Bridge Communities' Transitional Housing Program.
"We always need cars, but we need them now more than ever," stresses Bridge Program Director Karen Stewart. "As of today, we have six families in need of safe, reliable transportation."
Stewart explains that Bridge Communities almost never sells donated cars for cash; most cars donated to Bridge are thoroughly inspected and repaired by a local auto repair shop and are then given to Bridge families who need safe, reliable transportation. Only cars beyond reasonable repair are sold, with the funds going to Bridge Communities.
"This is a great time of year to donate, because if you donate by December 31, you can claim the donation on this year's tax return. Your tax write-off becomes someone else's lifeline to a job and ultimately a better future."
Anyone interested in donating a car to Bridge Communities should contact Bridge Communities' Program Director Karen Stewart at (630) 545-0610, ext. 17 or karen.stewart@bridgecommunities.org. Donations are tax deductible.
Thank you for helping our
client families! |

Church Family,
In the classic song of the Christmas Season, singer Andy Williams famously proclaimed, "It's the most wonderful time of the year!"
Now I might personally offer some protest about that. In my humble opinion, the opening weekend of the college basketball tournament every March is also worthy of consideration for that particular title.
But that small caveat notwithstanding, the Christmas season is pretty great.
Christmastime brings with it so many of the rich experiences of the season that we have come to love. Caroling and hot cocoa (which our church family will do together on December 22nd at 4pm), Christmas trees and stockings, Christmas festivities and Christmas parties, and treasured times with extended families.
I suppose Andy Williams has a point; the trappings of the Christmas Season do make it a most wonderful time.
But beyond, above and sometimes obscured behind the trappings of the Christmas Season is Jesus Christ. The Word of God made flesh and present on earth for us.
This coming Advent season at First Presbyterian we are going to take a good, hard look at this Christ-child who has been born for us. We are going to discover together the difference Jesus Christ makes in the world, in our lives, in our suffering and in our decision-making. We will work to focus our hearts and our minds on what God has done for us in the event of Christmas and why it matters to us personally and to the whole creation Christ came to save.
The Christmas Story is filled with people who encounter the Christ child and are forever changed. Shepherds, Magi, religious and nonreligious people have their lives fundamentally altered because of Jesus Christ. Come and see for yourself this Advent season the Difference Christ Makes.

Small Groups - Part 2
How to Live Different
"We live in a time-starved culture...while we affirm Christ calling us into relationship and all agree we need at least 2-3 close relationships, building those relationships can be difficult."
Participating in a Small Group provides the environment for connecting with people, authentic Christian spiritual friendships and meaningful conversation centered on the application of the Bible in our everyday life.
On Sunday, Feb. 3, Pastor Chris will launch a new Sermon Series that will be tied into a new Small Group initiative. An original curriculum is being specifically written for the purpose of engaging Small Groups with the Sunday morning Sermon Series.
How can I join a group or get more information?
Here are three good options:
1. For more information or to join a group, contact Cinda (469-2007 ext 22) in the church office or speak with a member of the leadership team listed below.
2. Plan to become a part of one of the new groups that will form in early 2013 as a part of a special sermon series that Pastor Chris is preparing. Groups will form during January and begin meeting in February. The Small Group Leadership Team will be available on Sunday mornings in January in the Gathering Place to answer questions and provide assistance.
3. Feel called to leadership and want to start your own group? Great!
Pastor Chris will lead a Facilitator Training Session on Tuesday Jan. 8, 6:30 - 8:00pm and Sunday Jan. 13, 12:30 - 2:00pm. Facilitators of current Small Groups and new Small Groups are invited to attend one of the Sessions. RSVP to Cinda at csiligmueller@firstpresge.org
Small Group experience is the best way we know of to grow in Christ and experience his life. Make 2013 the year you experience how to live different.

Spiritual Gifts: Discovering Them and Using Them
Facilitator: Jeff Crosby
10:15-11am, Parlor
Have you ever wondered what is meant by the phrase "spiritual gifts?" Do you know what your spiritual gifts are and how you can use them in your everyday life? In this season of Advent, come learn about the gifts God has given you and how you can serve him through the use of your spiritual gifts.
Brief Course Description:
God the Holy Spirit graciously bestows his own presence and power on ordinary followers of Jesus for loving service to others, for the common good. In this three-week class, we will explore this truth through the reading of scripture, teaching, video, conversations and an assessment tool titled, Discover Your Spiritual Gifts the Network Way, by Bruce Bugbee, which will be made available for $5 to class attendees.
Whether you have already identified your spiritual gifts and simply want to sharpen your understanding of how to use them, or you are new to the idea that God has gifted you with unique spiritual gifts, you'll find something in this course of help as you continue your journey as a Christ follower.
About the Facilitator:
Jeff Crosby has been a member of First Presbyterian Church of Glen Ellyn for ten years. He serves as Associate Publisher at InterVarsity Press in Downers Grove, Illinois. |

Faith Builders
A midyear update
Over 70 women are participating in Beth Moore's DVD study of James - Mercy Triumphs. Four small groups are meeting Thursday morning and one group meets on Wednesday evening. A key verse in the book of James is 2:18 - "But someone will say, 'You have faith; I have deeds.' Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do." We know our good deeds do not earn salvation. Yet, an expression of, an overflowing of our faith will result in good deeds. Recently, in the Thursday morning groups we had the opportunity to witness the truth of this verse. Duska Pearson and Leslie Trautwein offered the ladies a great opportunity - to participate in giving a Christmas gift to a child in the Dominican Republic. (Leslie, her husband Vic and their children are First Pres supported missionaries with Kid's Alive in the DR. and are currently here on furlough.) Leslie explained that this gift is the only gift the orphan children receive. They open the gifts one child at a time, cherishing the delight of receiving this very special gift. Duska and a team of other folks will travel to the DR before Christmas for the purpose of hand delivering the presents. Faith Builder ladies look forward to seeing pictures later of the children opening their gifts.
Women's Morning Apart
An update
Elizabeth, Beacon and Mary Martha Circles hosted a special morning for women on Nov. 7. Michelle DeMuir of nearby Jubilee Village was invited to be the guest speaker. Jubilee Village is a transitional and independent living program for single, formerly homeless mothers between the ages of 17 and 20 years of age. (Jubilee is part of the family of services of Outreach Community Ministries which is supported by First Pres.) Michelle told how God is reaching out to young mothers through the ministry to provide safe, secure housing and additional support. Hearing the story of one of the young mothers was sobering. It is challenging enough to raise a child, but when you are so young, completely without relational support, and without a job or childcare, it is daunting. Through the multi-pronged support they receive at Jubilee, their lives and the lives of their children are turned around. Truly, you can see God has reached down and lifted up these young women....giving them a future that is filled with hope and purpose. The women of the Circles were invited to bring 'baby basics' i.e. diapers, baby lotion, baby Motrin, Ora-jel, etc. It was incredible! Michelle took back boxes of supplies. She later said "thank you for the donations; you generously gave to us. When I brought them back, our case manager was very excited because we were completely out of most of these things! What a blessing you were to us, and I want you to know that your gifts will be a wonderful help to our young moms." What a privilege it is to see what God is doing in the world and to come alongside him to serve his people.

Ymen Family Game Night, Part 2
It's a Potluck Dinner...and You are Invited!
The reviews are in...From Mark and Betty Crane: "Everyone in our family had a good time at Family Fun Night-including our 16-year-old son and our 13-year-old daughter. It was a great way to break down artificial barriers, meet new friends from different backgrounds, and enjoy a few lively rounds of 'Pit,' 'Wits and Wagers,' and other games."
(First Pres member Mark Crane also serves on the YMEN board.)
From Allie Lindsay, age 8:
"My family had a great time at Game Night. I liked meeting new people and playing new games together. It was fun to ride in the church van to the city too."
From Mike Trout, Executive Director of YMEN:
"To see suburban and urban families across racial, gender, and socio-economic lines playing games of 'Monopoly,' 'Pit,' and 'Uno' must bring a smile to the face of God."
* Several families traveled to the YMEN Center in N. Lawndale, Chicago on Friday, November 2
* They shared dinner with YMEN families
* They played games in the gym
* Began forming a new community among members of First Pres and YMEN

Christmas Eve Offering
The Christmas Eve Offering is a tradition at First Pres. Typically, we divide the offering between two missions, one global and the other local or US. This year, the Missions Council has selected the Montana Mission Trip and Scholarships for students at Forman Christian College in Lahore, Pakistan.
Mission Fund for Montana Mission Trip.
First Pres has been traveling to Culbertson, Montana and working with 2 churches on the Ft. Peck Indian Reservation for 17 years. They typically focus in two areas:
* hosting a week-long Vacation Bible School (VBS) for children served by the Makaicu and Red Eagle Churches
* working on construction projects for those churches
This summer, the team was asked by Elder Sandra Lilley from the United Dakota Church in Wolf Point, Montana, to consider hosting a VBS this coming summer for children at their church. United Dakota is a large older church that struggles to cover maintenance costs. Wolf Point is located about 1 1/2 hours from Culbertson, Montana.
To develop a second VBS, the Montana Team will need additional materials, equipment for games, crafts, and snacks for approximately 30 children. Costs will also include transportation/gas as they will plan to split the VBS group and send a team to Wolf Point each day.
They anticipate also assisting United Dakota Church with maintenance and repairs. Any extra funds not used for VBS will be used for maintenance and repair.
These are the projected needs but, as the team experiences when they travel to Montana each year, they may see additional needs. The Christmas Eve fund will assist in this effort.
Forman Christian College Scholarship Fund.
A year and a half ago, Rev. Jim and Mrs. Beth Tebbe arrived to serve at Forman Christian College in Lahore, Pakistan. For Jim, this return to serve as Rector of Forman was a return to the place of his youth; his parents were missionaries in Pakistan. First Pres has agreed to come alongside the Tebbes' mission there, primarily by helping to support the scholarship fund for Christian students at Forman.
One of the stated goals of Forman is to give Christians, an under privileged minority, the ability not just to survive in Pakistani society but also to become leaders and full contributors in the cultural enterprise of shaping what it means to be Pakistani. In 2011, 14.2% of the students were Christians (total Christian population of Pakistan is less than 2%.) As the Christian community is largely made up of the poorest of the poor, proportionately more help goes to them (45% of the total scholarship money). Without this help most of these Christian (and poorer Muslim) students would not be able to attend.
The Missions Council has designated half the Christmas Eve offering as a contribution toward scholarships for Christian students at Forman. |
Accommodating Worship For Individuals With Special Needs
At a recent Worship Council meeting, members expressed a desire to be as inclusive and accommodating as possible for individuals with special needs. Our goal is to facilitate a meaningful Worship experience for all of the congregants at First Presbyterian Church - Glen Ellyn. To reach this goal, we would like your help identifying individuals with unmet needs whom we can reach out to.
Are you aware of any individuals in the community who would join us in Worship if their physical, sensory, and/or cognitive barriers were eliminated through appropriate modifications or accommodations?
Are you aware of any current members who are not getting the most out of the Worship experience because of some unmet needs?
If the answer to either of these questions is "yes," please let one of the council members know. We discussed contacting community-based, professional organizations, but want to get our church members' input first. With your help, we will be able to reach out to the greater community and perhaps include individuals who feel isolated and alone.
Paul Drennan, Steve Fessenbecker, Barb Meyer, Christina Riley, Karen Blake, Kerri Andersen, Phyllis Kidd, Kathryn Jordan and Bob Clauss - Worship Council |
What's happening at Westminster Preschool?
Thank you to everyone who made our fund-raiser a big success. We raised the money needed to purchase new tables and chairs for the classrooms! We plan to change over the rooms at Christmas break. Everyone will enjoy the fresh look once we return after the New Year.
We had a wonderful Thanksgiving Worship with the children. Rev. Peggy Lindsey shared the Bible story, and once again the children brought non-perishable food items for the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry as their offering. Many parents and grandparents worshipped with us as well. We collected seven boxes of food to share with our community. We are blessed to share the gift of giving and helping others with these children at an early age.
With December here, we of course are busy creating a "surprise" for our families - a special hand made gift of love. We will continue to explore our alphabet letters, the color red and hear the Christmas story in many versions. Our dramatic play area often features a small Christmas tree with simple ornaments for the children to decorate and un-decorate in role playing.
The highlight of the month is the annual Christmas Sing program. This year on December 19 (10:30am) and 20 (10:30 and 2:00) we will witness the joy of the season through their beautiful voices. It is truly a blessing and an outreach to our families and the community. We welcome you to join us in person or in spirit, for the annual Westminster Christmas Sing.

Sleep Out Saturday
On a recent cold November night, 24 youth and three adults spent the night participating in Bridge Communities Sleep out Saturday. Attending a Bridge Communities rally, we heard from families helped by Bridge in their successful transition from homelessness. What a mighty transition.
We studied God's word, digging into scriptures that call us to be the hand and feet of Christ. We learned from Matthew 25:31-46 that Jesus leaves no room for doubt regarding what we are to do to help those in need. We are to feed the hungry, offer drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, invite in the stranger, care for the sick, and visit those in prison. As kids aged 11-18, we know our assistance comes in many forms. We know that our kind deeds, great and small, add up to help others.
We discussed Luke 10:25-37 reflecting on the fact that "my neighbor" is not limited to the folks next door. "My neighbor" most definitely includes the homeless man, woman, and child.
In the church parking lot we built a campfire for warmth, and cardboard box shelters that our "families" slept in. We tried to stay warm, feel safe, and get a good night's sleep. We tried to remain unafraid as we listened to the sound of a coyote pack fill the night sky. We were grateful we were dry.
We discussed that when we are alive in Christ, our actions towards others are the direct result of Christ working through us. When we are willing to turn our lives over to him, we take part in caring for others without thought of our own gain, that His attitude and actions take the lead and soon we are serving in His name and for His glory in many ways.
Did I mention we also had an awesome time of fellowship? We played crazy games, ate lots of snacks, and all that great youth group kind of stuff. Oh, and we raised $784 which was donated to Bridge to help more families transition from homelessness. |

Thanksgiving PADS
"Thank you, Lord, for waking us this morning." That was the start of the prayer that our guest, Chris, said before our meal. It is certainly humbling to hear how grateful our guests are for the gift of a new day despite their situation. We fed 54, which means that many regulars were probably blessed to be with family for the holiday. The meal you provided was amazing! We had more leftovers than expected due to low numbers and extra donations. So, we treated them to leftover turkey sandwiches in their lunches for the next day. We had some new helpers serving and in the kitchen, which made clean-up of the "good china" a breeze. The little ones I watch, as well as my own older daughters, made turkey centerpieces to add to the joy of the day.
Many of us got the chance to talk to our guests and enjoy the evening with them. When my family joined PADS at First Pres for Thanksgiving about five years ago, it was our hope that we could make the day feel as much like a traditional Thanksgiving as possible. You all helped to make that happen. Though celebrating the holiday with your own families, you all found a way to get the donations to church. You are very special, and I cannot thank you enough for all you do.
