Another Museum Exhibit - The New York Museum of Arts and Design (MAD)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In the last SomeTimes we talked about this Summer's upcoming Ventura Museum show, for which Scott Sucher, of New Mexico, has cutt miniaturized - scale - replicas of diamonds worn in historical times.
Now, we've learned that there's an upcoming show this summer, in New York, also having to do with faceted diamond replicas, this time the work of John Hatleberg.  John will be participating in the NYCity Makers Exhibition at The Museum of Arts and Design in New York this Summer.
-- click for more information here
Here's a photo of the antique Baldachino that John uses for his faceting table (see him at work in the inset) and various gems arrayed on the tabletop.
If you go to John's website,
you will find much interesting information about him and his diamond replicas, including images of famous diamonds - the Hope, Koh-I-Noor (on the dop), - and many others.
INTRODUCING A NEW ULTRA TEC REPRESENTATIVE
Vejdi Ziyanzsiz of Ismir, Turkey
In Turkey - in Ismir, to be more specific, Vejdi Ziyanzsiz is the new Ultra Tec Representative.  His company, Silica Gems, has been supplying various lapidary tools - and now, with Ultra Tec machines, he adds custom faceting to his equipment lineup.
Vejdi is a professional geologist, and while working for Canadian and Australian gold mining companies, and mining companies in Turkey, he had the opportunity to pay some attention to his hobby, gemstones.  Vejdi says, "I know many secret places in Turkey for gemstones especially agates and chalcedonies".
Turkey is a "new country" for Ultra Tec, and we look forward to this association.
We welcome Ultra Tec cutter Dave Sommers of Bend, Oregon - Sunstone country - to the Ultra Tec Team.
His website is www.silicagem.com
Ottorino "Tony" Invernizzi of Maggiore Lake, Italy
The Maggiore Lake area in northern Italy, near Milan and Turin, is home base for Ottorino "Tony" Invernizzi.  Tony brings much experience to his being an Ultra Tec representative.  He has been a faceter for many years.  He purchased his first Ultra Tec through the help of then-rep Prof. Sergio Gallo.  Through the years, Tony perfected his faceting techniques - including development of his own designs.  In 1990, he participated in International Faceting Challenge, as a member of the USA team.  Tony specializes in the faceting of rare soft gems, such as Barite, Cuprite, Rhodocrosite - perfecting his technique in that difficult area.
FACETING 101 with Arya Akhavan
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Arya's series of FACETING 101 Videos -- the last batch of which have recently been published -- provide a great learning experience to the new, and some not so new, faceters. Both Arya and ourselves have had overwhelmingly positive feedback on the videos -- and lots of great suggestions for additional segments coming in the future.

In the interests of reaching as many faceters around the world (YouTube can't be accesseed in much of Asia) we've mirrored the series on the YouTube alternative service VIMEO.

Here's an Index to the Video Series...
