CONSIDERATIONS IN BUYING A FACETING MACHINE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That was the subject of a video we did back in 1987. It was shot in VHS format, and unused for years - but we dusted it off and looked at it - and found it instructive.
The video format had gotten old, but the message hadn't - the "considerations" are pretty much the same today. So we converted it into digital format, and made it available.
ULTRA TEC Faceting - 1987 - Marketing Video Part 1 (of 5)
|
The Video shows 1987 hardware (the old blue color), and demonstrates the basic continuity and integrity of Ultra Tec design principles - something that remains at the heart of our ongoing engineering program. A number of significant upgrades in Ultra Tec faceting equipment were made in the following years - but, as discussed on the video, all could be installed into existing hardware - however old it might be. A "non-obsolescence" pledge.
One observation on the video was that many doctors facet gemstones - considering it a "therapy" from their daily stress. And now, appearing on the scene in the last few years, a med student, doctor to-be, Arya Arkhavan, has become prominent in the faceting world, writing on related topics and turning out new designs at an impressive pace. He also has done some videos that you may find interesting.
Arya's series of FACETING 101 Videos -- the first batch of which appear here -- provide a great learning experience to the new, and some not so new, faceters. We'll be releasing the full series over the coming
TUCSON USFG Symposium... Final Schedule
Friday morning - February 7th 2014
Presentation at the Old Pueblo Lapidary Club in Tucson:
8:00am
 Al Gilbertson, project manager of cut research for GIA, talks regarding t he basic use of DiamCalc software as it relates to colored gemstones.
As most faceters cut designs either created themselves or purchased commercially, one may be wondering whether they've made a good design choice in regards to the type of rough they are working with. For years, by trial and error alone, a faceter could improve how a particular design worked out. Due to advances in technology, it is possible that by using software specifically designed to analyze how a finished gem may turn out, one could make adjustments in the design elements to enhance an appearance - or to reduce potential detrimental effects.
Having performed years of research in this area, Mr. Gilbertson will share with us the basics of using DiamCalc software and how it could enhance our work. This presentation is for those who may have an interest in pursuing the use of software to enhance their designs.
Participants do not need to own DiamCalc software. Though, it would be helpful if you are already familiar with GemCad.
This seminar is for faceters both new and experienced who have an interest in determining whether a design they are working with, whether acquired or created themselves, has merit.
Al will begin promptly at 8:00am on Friday morning the 7th of February. He is available till roughly 10:15 where he will need to be back at his post with GIA staff in the Tucson Convention Center. Al understands this topic will create many questions. So he will bring his formal presentation to an end at about 9:30-ish and then take questions.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ 10:30am - Dr. Bill Hanneman
"The Hanneman Identification Scheme for Rough and Faceted Gemstones".
 Dr Hanneman will begin at roughly 10:30, and we've allowed 1-1/2 hours. In addition to sharing his unique concepts for processing identification specifically for faceters, he will also exhibit and demonstrate techniques he developed over 40 years ago that are still valid today. Dr Hanneman's methods are well-suited for those gem cutters making buying decisions when away from their shop equipment. Faceters should look at this as an opportunity to add another valuable tool to their arsenal to assist in making good purchasing decisions.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Where: Old Pueblo Lapidary Club building 3118 North Dale Avenue, Tucson, AZ 85712 - if you are at all familiar with Tucson, the location is near the intersection of North Alvernon Way and Fort Lowell Road.
