ARTICLE BY AL GILBERTSON
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 | Al Gilbertson |
Al's article is about UNDERSTANDING BRILLIANCE, FIRE, AND SCINTILLATION in gemstones. it was the basis of his lecture at the US Faceters Guild seminar in Tucson 2012. Published in a recent GEMS AND GEMOLOGY, the article can be accessed at...
Al's interest in stones and lapidary started at a very early age - inspired by his father. Living in the Fresno area, and under the tutelage of local professional cutters, he became - and continues to be - an Ultra Tec faceter.
Al became a Graduate Gemologist (GG) and continued on with what is now a 30 year career with the GIA. He is a Research Associate with the GIA in Carlsbad, California, where, among many other related gem studies, he worked on the GIA diamond cut grading system that was introduced in 2006.
MYLAR LAPS ARE BACK!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SPECTRA - BLUE specially milled Cerium Oxide mylar-film polishing pads are back!!
Specially good for Quartz materials, Spectra pads went through a rocky period (pun intended) during which users reported poor performance. What happened? The supplier of the material had changed, and in the process technology was lost - some reinventing was needed, by someone who cared. And, that's been done...with great results.
When we tested this new supply we were very pleased with it. But we knew that customer reaction would be the acid test - so, when Ultra Tec faceter Bill Booze, who had waited for the "new ones", sent us an email saying "YOWKAPOWIEE", it changed our "pleased" to HAPPY.
We supply Spectra in packages of 10 - typically an Ultra Lap will do a number of stones (we found that if some of the polish material skives down to the bare mylar, keep on using it - the skived edge is actually quite effective.
