Town hires an Economic Development Coordinator

Alyssa Sandoval, AICP, is the new Economic Development Coordinator for the Town of Bedford. Prior to her position with Bedford, Alyssa worked on the economic development elements of master plans for communities throughout New England when she worked as a consultant at VHB based in Watertown, MA. She has previously worked as a planner for the City of Pleasanton in California where she assisted with permitting complex commercial projects and assisting in revising permitting processes to be more streamlined. Alyssa is a certified planner through the American Institute of Certified Planners, and has a Master of Regional Planning from Cornell University. Alyssa is eager to reach out to businesses, both existing and potential, in Bedford.

Alyssa is actively working with the Chamber of Commerce in identifying efforts to collaborate on, such as enhanced outreach to small businesses and to the high tech and biotech cluster of companies in Bedford.

If you need assistance on next steps as you are thinking about opening or expanding a business, please contact Alyssa. Her office is located at Town Hall, and she can be reached at 781-275-1111, and by email at asandoval@bedfordma.gov.

TEE IT UP WITH YOUR FELLOW CHAMBER MEMBERS
golf2.jpgThe Chambers' weekly Tee It Up Golf is a great way to do some networking and swing a few clubs.  This is not a league, so you don't have to commit for the entire season. Every week we will send you an invite to sign up, so you choose when and how many times you want to play. All levels are welcome - (we promise we will pair you with someone who won't make fun of your swing). Tee Times start at 4:30 PM. The cost is $15.00 per person and you pay as you play.

There are only 28 slots so don't wait of you want sign up!

Business Development Updates

 Submitted by Adam Schwartz

Retail Best Practices. Karen Kenney gave feedback of the event she attended in Lowell and her discussion with the event organizers. She thought a similar event would work well in Bedford, although it should be customized to our business needs. Karen is going to explore two options for an event in Bedford:

Depot Park Kiosk. The group had a discussion on how to proceed. It was recommended that we provide 2 different options to the Bedford Depot Park Advisory Committee.

A. Standard Sign

B. Touch Screen Kiosk - See http://www.mdks.com/support/pagepics/sm_kp42r.jpg for an example

Adam will also contact the Depot Committee to get a date scheduled to present the proposals.

Planning Board Updates.
A. Bedford Market Place Shopping Center. They are ready to move forward with renovations. This will include the demolition of the existing postal service distribution center which is expected to move to the TD Bank Building across the street.
B. Bedford Business Park - They are interesting in acquiring the old MassDot property on Crosby Drive which is located adjacent to their property.
C. Bedford Motel - They are looking in to options on what to do with the property.
D. Middlesex Turnpike Area - The planning board is expected to begin exploring some zoning changes for this area and hope to have rezoning recommendation for the Spring 2015 town meeting.

4. Alyssa Sandoval, the economic development co-ordinator for Bedford joined the group. Alyssa gave a summary on some of the projects she has started which include; developing a new business guide, marketing materials to promote Bedford, putting together a database of Bedford businesses and commercial property and contacting local businesses to organize forums on topics such as shuttle service. The first forum is scheduled for June and is expected to comprise of businesses from the Wiggins Avenue area. T

5. Chamber Software Upgrades. The Chamber is currently evaluating new software designed specifically for Chambers of Commerce. The group had a brief discussions on new features they would like to see. These included;
ability to send out mailings, ability for directors to add events and access to the member database.

Chamber Announcements

THE EAST COAST WIZARDS WOULD LIKE YOU TO CONSIDER OPENING YOUR HOME AND BILLETING ONE OF OUR JUNIOR HOCKEY PLAYERS!
The East Coast Wizards have recently started Junior Men's and a Junior Women's Ice Hockey Teams, where the ages run from 16-20
years old. As many of the players are from out of state, and will be continuing their education locally, they are in need of families like yours to billet them as they grow through these formative years. The Wizards' focus is on the development of young hockey players, but a major part of our goal is to assist these players as they become more mature, responsible and productive individuals. Your role in this endeavor will be vital in this development; for the next nine months, you will be a mentor, friend, counselor, and
extended family for the player(s) in your home. Your role is to provide a structured environment for the players outside the rink. For more information please contact Michelle Palumbo
