ANNUAL DINNER & CELEBRATION
FEBRUARY 19
6-9 PM
Doubletree Bedford Glen Hotel
|
The invitations have been mailed.......and if you have never been to a annual dinner, this is what you have been missing....
"A fun night had by all. What other chamber combines a fun night with community service?"
Bryan McKay- Middlesex Savings Bank
"I don't know what a "typical chamber dinner" is but I sure enjoy our Bedford Chamber of Commerce annual dinners! We get to reconnect with or meet the folks who run the local businesses and corporations, have fun and eat. I think that because the annual dinner is so well attended and the speeches are short, the dynamics of the event and interactions are really fruitful."
Jean Marc Slak- Slak Chiropractics
"Entertaining and worth attending, Great food, Great desserts & Fun" Maria Porto - Hanscom Federal Credit Union
The guest speaker is Hank Phillippi Ryan, the on- air investigative reporter for Boston's NBC affiliate. She's won 30 EMMYs, 12 Edward R. Murrow awards and dozens of other honors for her ground breaking journalism. A best selling author of six mystery novels, Ryan has won multiple prestigious awards for her crime fiction: the Agatha, Anthony, Macavity, and most recently, the coveted Mary Higgins Clark Award. National reviews have called her a "master at crafting suspenseful mysteries" and "a superb and gifted storyteller." Her newest thriller, THE WRONG GIRL, is a Boston Globe bestseller and was dubbed "Another winner" in a Book list starred review. She's on the national board of Mystery Writers of America and 2013 president of national Sisters in Crime.

Business Development Updates
| SCORE -SCORE is free business counseling service provided to entrepreneurs, both for profit and not-for-profits. They work with both new and established businesses mentoring them in their development of business plans, financials, sales, marketing, operations - all phases of their business. SCORE currently works with businesses in Burlington and Concord and would like to reach businesses based in Bedford. Businesses make appointments to met with them. They visit each town twice a month. For the first step, The Chamber has agreed to promote the SCORE service to Bedford businesses but appointments will initially be scheduled in Burlington. As interests builds, the appointments can be moved to Bedford. SCORE meets with one business at a time, so a conference room that can hold six or more people will eventually be needed for a few hours twice a month. The Chamber will be promoting SCORE through it's website and in upcoming newsletters. We will probably also have SCORE attend an upcoming catch the net event in Bedford.
Sign By Law. The Attorney General Has signed off on the changes. The extension to the temporary exemption to the Sign Bylaw granted by the Selectmen permitting businesses to display movable freestanding signs ends on January 31. Businesses wishing to display these signs (i.e., A-frames, sandwich board signs) must now obtain a Special Permit from the Zoning Board of Appeals. Special Permit applications are available at the Code Enforcement office at Town Hall. Staff will be glad to discuss sign requirements and restrictions with applicants. Failure to obtain a Special Permit for these signs may result in possible enforcement action by Code Enforcement officials.
Tourism - The group discussed focusing on making businesses as well as historical landmarks more visible to Bedford Visitors who seem to be unaware of what is nearby. The group agreed to make this a priority goal for 2014 and will first focus on the Depot Park area by adding QR codes that link to maps as well as working with other groups to get a Kiosk installed.
