For the past five years LifeSTEPS has experienced steady and consistent growth. In fact, since October 2012 we have initiated services at 11 new affordable housing properties (currently we provide services at 218 properties). As ever, we are committed to providing the highest possible standard of service to the residents we assist. With this growth and our commitment to service excellence in mind, we look forward to providing residents even more opportunity for growth by expanding the breadth and depth of enhanced services through our relationships with USA Properties Fund (JB Brown Fund), Amcal Multihousing (Hope Fund), Change a Life Foundation, Weingart Foundation, and the many other partners who are creating a hope for the future for the low-income residents we all serve. We are grateful for each of our supporters and look forward to sharing our clients' success stories during the course of 2013. |

LifeSTEPS Increases Aid to Residents by 44% in 2012
During 2012 LifeSTEPS provided $462,000 in direct financial assistance to 973 individuals (467 households). LifeSTEPS provides a safety net for individuals and families who are in danger of becoming homeless due to a financial crisis. LifeSTEPS social workers empower the residents served by helping them analyze their financial situation, create reasonable budgets, and develop plans that will yield long-term sustainability. A central feature of the Client Assistance program is LifeSTEPS' 3-month financial education program - which is required of those who receive direct financial assistance. Residents receiving this assistance must also engage in 6-months of intensive case management. In 2011 LifeSTEPS provided $319,000 in assistance to 756 individuals (282 households).
This assistance also includes grants provided to individuals through the Change A Life Foundation. A high percentage of these grants were awarded to assist older adults. Funds have been used to pay for dental work, scooters and other mobility devices, hearing aids and transportation. Grants have also been received to help domestic violence victims complete their recovery, and for children who have suffered trauma.
The preponderance of aid assisted residents in paying their rent during a crisis. Direct financial assistance caps at $400 and is paid directly to the vendor (e.g. property management). 87% of those who receive this type of aid from LifeSTEPS remained in their home for 12-months or longer.
The social impact of this aid is profound. Keeping people housed saves tax payers approximately $10,000 per person assisted (source: United Way Greater Los Angeles). Additionally, by keeping children housed and rooted to their school and community, mobility issues are circumvented. Numerous studies have indicated that student mobility is a major contributor to a student's poor academic performance, leads to socialization issues, and ultimately can lead to a child dropping out of school. In helping a family achieve a greater degree of self-sufficiency and sustainability, children will tend to do better in school, form more positive relationships, and have more opportunities to break the cycle of poverty.

LifeSTEPS to Team With Sacramento Public Library Foundation to Promote Summer Reading Program
LifeSTEPS has embarked on another pioneering project that will benefit low-income residents in the Natomas area of Sacramento. Partnering with the Sacramento Public Library, the Sacramento Public Library Foundation, North Natomas Library, Friends of the North Natomas Library and Pacific Housing, LifeSTEPS will help facilitate a literacy event designed to connect area low-income residents to the many services and benefits provided by the North Natomas Library. The event is scheduled for Wednesday, May 22.
Under the leadership and support of Sacramento Vice-Mayor Angelique Ashby, the event will provide residents with an exclusive tour of the library, and present all of the various services and resources available. These include: homework assistance for children, adult literacy, ESL classes, citizenship classes...and even access to free automobile repair services!
The objective of the event is to provide a library card to every resident who attends, teach residents how to maximize their use of library resources, and enroll children into the Library's summer reading program. The long-term goal of the project is to promote literacy among all low-income residents because literacy is the foundation of cultivating self-sufficiency and a better quality of life.

An example of this excellence is demonstrated by the recent promotions earned by a number of LifeSTEPS employees:
Maydy Bran-Orona has been promoted to the position of Director of Operations. She is responsible for supervising the organization's overall supportive services operations. One of LifeSTEPS longest tenured employees, Maydy brings a wealth of experience, energy and ideas to her new role. Maydy has a MA degree in Clinical Psychology and is on her way to earning a Ph.D. in Organizational Development.
Zoila Parodi has been promoted to Senior Regional Director of Social Services. In addition to supervising her own region (Desert), she provides oversight to our Los Angeles - Valley region as well. One of LifeSTEPS' most respected social workers, Zoila's experience and insights are invaluable assets as we pursue higher standards of service. Zoila has been with LifeSTEPS for over seven year. She has a BA in Psychology.
Nancey Parks has been promoted to the Accountant position. A mainstay in our corporate office, Nancey's generous and helpful nature are appreciated by field and administrative personnel alike. Nancey has a long history of community service, having served at the St. Vincent DePaul Food Locker, in addition to teaching financial literacy to homeless individuals through HomeStart.
Aura Justice has been promoted to After School Program Supervisor for the Desert Region. Extremely dedicated to children, and with a heart for building community resiliency, we feel certain that Aura's leadership will facilitate more and more children being served. |

The Gift of Mobility
Change a Life Grant Recipient
Seventy-eight year old Jack and his lovely wife, Nola, were active community members as soon as they became residents at AMCAL's Mirandela in Rancho Palos Verdes. They were enjoying community socials and educational classes hosted by LifeSTEPS. They became friends with their neighbors and got to know their LifeSTEPS social worker.
Then, nearly a year later, Jack had a stroke and everything changed. Their world was turned upside down. Jack could no longer walk without assistance and he was experiencing pain in his legs. He withdrew from his neighbors and his family. Nola was troubled by his depression and discomfort and sought out the LifeSTEPS Social Worker for help.
LifeSTEPS began conducting friendly visits to provide encouragement to Jack and Nola, as well as to evaluate what services would be useful to them. Jack's greatest obstacle was his inability to mobilize without assistance. Although he was still confined to his apartment, he was uplifted by his social worker's visits and support.
Many months after the stroke, Jack's social worker presented him with an opportunity to acquire an electric scooter through LifeSTEPS' partnership with Change a Life Foundation. Jack and Nola were delighted with the possibility. LifeSTEPS was able to successfully secure a grant on Jack's behalf. Through the provision of an electric scooter Jack's independence was restored- as was his zest for life!
Once again, Jack can be seen outside in the fresh air, attending educational classes and socializing with friends and neighbors at community gatherings. He is enjoying visiting with his family again and Nola is relieved to see that the depression has lifted and appreciates the support they have received from the Change a Life Foundation and continues to receive from LifeSTEPS. |

Working Together
Helping Families

Property Management often plays an integral role in helping clients stay securely housed. At times they are the first to know that a resident is experiencing a crisis. For example, when a client that typically pays their rent on time falls behind on rent, this is often a red flag. The close working relationship between property management and LifeSTEPS expedites solutions for residents in crisis.
Management refers residents to LifeSTEPS as well as notifies LifeSTEPS that a family may need help. For example, when the Nunez family suffered a setback, LifeSTEPS and Property Management worked together to meet their needs. Manager, Marie Cook, was quick to respond to requests for paperwork necessary to process their client assistance request.
This large close knit family has been residing at Terracina Cathedral City Apartments since 2003. They have experienced various difficulties of late, including a death in the family, physical ailments and then Mrs. Nunez was laid off from her job at the Marriott Hotel. Any one of these could lead to financial difficulties, but in combination they left the family unable to pay their rent.
Mrs. Nunez sought out LifeSTEPS for assistance. Her LifeSTEPS Social Worker helped her apply for unemployment benefits. They also reviewed the family's budget and determined that they qualified for financial assistance from the LifeSTEPS Client Assistance Program. LifeSTEPS was able to help with rent which alleviated some of the financial stress as well as created a means for Mr. Nunez to get retinopathy surgery - a medical procedure to prevent his vision from further deteriorating. Funding for this family was made possible through LifeSTEPS partnership with the Weingart Foundation.
This story is a great example of how LifeSTEPS wrap around services meet the needs of families on many levels. In addition to providing rental assistance, the family's oldest daughter is benefiting from a scholarship from the JB Brown Fund while she attends CSU San Bernardino. The grade school aged children are improving their grades at the LifeSTEPS After School Program and each child has been recognized at their school as a "Student of the Month."
The family actively gives back by serving at community events. Their positive attitude contributes to their resilience in the face of adversity. The LifeSTEPS Social Worker reports that she is honored to work with them. And likewise, Mrs. Nunez tells us, "I am pleased to know that a program like this is in my community. LifeSTEPS wants to help us. Our social worker is so kind and loving and enjoys working with the residents at Terracina at Cathedral City." |
