I've heard it said more than once: The only production in which you have a starring role is your own life.  To everyone else you encounter, you're just a bit player in their life productions.

 

I suspect each of us has some little kid inside us saying, "But I wanna be the star all the time!" While that may be how you feel, if you try acting on that feeling, your business will be in a world of hurt.

 

When you're providing a service to others, the only thing your clients care about is how you'll make their lives better.  They don't care that you just survived moving from out of state, that your spouse may be losing his/her job, that you broke your arm and can't use your dominant hand...

 

No. It's all about them.

 

If you find yourself trying to steal the spotlight from your clients and prospects, use the following tools to manage the production better so that everybody wins - regardless of who's got the leading role.

Constantly fine-tune your reception of station WIIFT.

This is probably one of the longest-lived mini-parables in business today - and for good reason.

"WIIFT" stands for "What's In It For Them?", "them" being your prospects and clients.

To compellingly answer this question, you have to dig past the easy, facile responses to get at answers that will address the pain they feel deep in their guts.

So you're highly credentialed in your field and have half a dozen certifications.  They don't care about that!  What they care about is that those credentials and certifications make it far more likely that you'll avoid making stupid, novice mistakes when you work on their project, which means they'll feel like they invested their money well, which means they'll feel good about themselves and they'll probably be able to feel even better when your work helps them produce the results they want.

How will you solve their pain and calm their fears?  That's all they really care about.
