INTERZUM - May 13-16, 2013 Cologne, Germany
|
Every two years in Cologne Germany, tens of thousands of visitors gather at the world's largest trade show for the furniture and interior finishing industries. For many years HORIZON participated in the fair through cooperation with our European connections.
We will be there in May! Hall 5-1 will host both our individual booth and that of our German representative and friends, Holz Braun. We look forward to sharing the time and working together to promote the use of American Hardwoods. Horizon's wood has played a role in the European furniture manufacturing industry for decades - we continue on!.

Wonderful ways with Walnut |
Walnut: dark, rich, deep. Wood with a story to tell. There is certain kind of magic involved when it comes to bringing out the best in a great piece of walnut. It takes an eye like Peter Schmitt's of Schmitt Custom Furniture in Minneapolis, along with a good dose of creative freedom, to let go of the reins and let the wood speak for itself. Bookmatched crotches flow, butterfly joints allow the wood to breathe, voids enrich the table tops. Spectacular results. We are wowed. Space does not allow us to post a lot of the photos, but we urge you to take a look at the creations showcased on the Schmitt Custom Furniture website. Take a good look at the walnut selections; the coffee, trestle and dining tables. You may just recognize the beauty of HORIZON wood enhancing the pieces! For those with perhaps a more conventional focus, we are happy to share the work of John Goudreault. In his skilful hands HORIZON's walnut takes on a modern look with clean, contemporary lines . Goudreault's work is a study in tight joinery, bread board ends, closely matching grains. Sophisticated and stylish, understatedly elegant. Again, we are impressed. To see more, take a minute and visit the website of John Goudreault Fine Furniture. Walnut, a wonderful species that adapts to the desires of the craftsman. A joy to work with, a treasure to touch. Wonderful walnut.

Customer Highlight
The building of a beautiful rocker, using HORIZON wood, of course!
|
A search of the web led this skilled woodworker to HORIZON. Gerry, who hales from the southeastern part of Pennsylvania, latched on to the hardwood inventory selections posted on our www.horizonevolutions.com site. While searching for cherry, photos of our beautiful 9/4 material caught his eye. Gerry's talent and patience transformed that special wood into an heirloom rocker. We have no doubt that someday his granddaughter will be rocking her babies in it! Gerry recorded the process of building his masterpiece and we have included it here in a build diary format. We encourage you to take a look!
|
The photos hint at the detail that has gone into this creation. It is loaded with spectacular grain matching, complex joinery, and numerous beautiful laminations and transitions. Gerry does not hesitate to give credit to his mentor, Hal Taylor for the design and build process. Not only were Hal's book and video pivotal in the crafting of the chair, but he also provided Gerry with generous support and guidance via email during construction. Hal's templates were utilized in various places during the process. To learn more about Hal and his passion for rocking chair building, visit the Rocking Chair University.
