Blue Access for Members

Faculty and staff who are enrolled in one of the Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) plans may now sign up for Blue Access for Members (BAM).  Blue Access for Members is a secured online service that provides individuals with web or mobile direct access to valuable healthcare information.  Some of the resources enable BAM enrollees to:

  • Review balances, claims status, benefits, coverage details and more
  • Order a replacement ID card or print a temporary card
  • View and print an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) for a claim
  • Search for and compare doctors, hospitals and dentists nearby using Provider Finder
  • Use the Cost Estimator tool to research and estimate costs of services and treatments from doctors, hospitals and other facilities

In order to access BAM, register at http://www.bcbsil.com/member.  Have your BCBS ID card available as part of the registration process.  If you have any general questions about BAM, please contact the Benefits Division at benefits@northwestern.edu or 847-491-7513.

LGBT Pride Month

In 2000, President Clinton declared June, "Gay and Lesbian Pride Month." Today we commemorate it as LGBT Pride Month. The B (Bisexual) and the T (Transgender) were more recent additions - as the community looks inward and strives to be more inclusive and affirming.  Fifteen years ago, President Clinton called on the Nation to celebrate the progress American society had made toward rejecting bigotry and embracing inclusion.  Moreover, the President asked the nation to recognize the joys and the sorrows gay men and lesbians had witnessed throughout history and challenged us to progress even further.

The month of June was selected to commemorate the watershed moment in LGBT history when gay men, lesbians, and transgender people fought back against the routine harassment of the New York City Police. The conflict ignited into the Stonewall Riots - widely recognized as the birth of the modern LGBT movement.

Please join the Office of Equal Opportunity and Access (OEOA) as we extend our gratitude to the LGBT community around the world as well as to the LGBT staff, faculty, and students here at Northwestern for their exemplary contributions to our lives. We are profoundly enriched through their example and their presence.

The Office of Equal Opportunity and Access encourages you to follow the link, http://gaytravel.about.com/od/gaypridefestivals/qt/Chicago_Pride.htm, for information on activities and events going on in the Chicagoland area in commemoration of LGBT Pride Month.

Ricky Byrdsong Memorial Race Against Hate

The Office of Equal Opportunity and Access would like to encourage you to participate in the Ricky Byrdsong Memorial Race Against Hate, being held June 21, 2015.  Ricky Byrdsong, former Northwestern University Head Basketball Coach, was shot and killed by a white supremacist in 1999 while walking with his children.  The Race was launched by Ricky Byrdsong's wife to honor the legacy of her husband and to "bring attention to the need to combat hatred in all of its forms."  The Race is a 10K and 5K run, 5K walk, and a fun youth mile.  There are also opportunities to volunteer in support capacities.  The Ricky Byrdsong Memorial Race Against Hate is held every Father's Day and is in its sixteenth year.

Office of Human Resources Stands Against Racism

The Office of Human Resources was proud to join with the YWCA Evanston/North Shore to Stand Against Racism on April 23, 2015. The Office of Human Resources, along with the Office of Equal Opportunity and Access and several other Northwestern University departments, were also program partners for this event.  Northwestern had record participation this year.  Below are a few snapshots of the day.

Payroll/FASIS

Update Your Mailing Address for W-2's

If you will be returning home for the summer, graduating, or otherwise leaving the University, don't forget to update your home address in the FASIS Self Service Portal. Any time you switch residences, including student housing, you need to update your address on file with Human Resources. This is important to ensure future tax documents, including your year-end W-2 form, and other necessary communications reach you. To update your address, log onto https://nupa.northwestern.edu and navigate to: My Personal Information > Update My Home Address. Click the pencil "edit" icon next to your current address to edit it, and save your changes.

NOTE: Address changes on SES do not automatically change your FASIS address. The FASIS change must be done separately.

You must edit your address before you leave the University.  Once your job ends, you can no longer access the Self Service Portal to make address changes.  If you are leaving Northwestern, you should also add a personal email address in the Self Service Portal.  This ensures that Payroll can contact you regarding next year's W-2 even after your NU email is expired.

NOTE TO ADMINISTRATORS

1. Terminating Temporary Employees

As the academic year draws to a close, please ensure that temporary employees in your department who will not work at the University during Summer 2015 are terminated from employement.  The employees' job records can be terminated in FASIS Production by administrative users with access to the Temp Panel.  When the Temp Panel is open for editing, navigate to: /Workforce Administration/Job Information/Maintain Job Information-Temps/Temp Panel.

Terminating these employees will help prevent unapproved/unauthorized payments to the individual and help the University remain in compliance with the Affordable Care Act.  Any temporary employees who return to your department this fall may be rehired upon their return.

2. Cognos PED By HR Department Now Live

We are pleased to announce that the new Payroll Expense Distribution (PED) Report by HR Department/ Employee has been released in the Cognos/BI Reporting Tool!  This new report, equivalent to the NWPAY013 in Vista, joins the existing PED by Chart of Accounts that has been available in Cognos since last spring.  Users with an existing FASIS Admin ID and current access to Vista or Cognos PED reports have automatically received access to the new PED by Employee.  Any new user must submit a security form, as is standard practice, to obtain initial access to FASIS Admin and Cognos PED reports.

Questions regarding the Cognos tool or understanding the PED data may be directed to the FASIS helpdesk at 7-4800 or fasishelp@northwestern.edu

Staffing

Bringing Volunteers and Interns On Board

We have reached the time of year when departments bring volunteers and interns on board. Federal and state regulations outline the circumstances in which organizations can bring in these unpaid individuals, and it is important that the Office of Human Resources is notified prior to any volunteers or interns starting in your area to ensure the individuals meet these requirements. We ask that you notify us at least two weeks prior to the individual's planned start date in order to allow sufficient time for review of the proposed arrangement.

Once the Office of Human Resources has reviewed the arrangement, the volunteer or intern will be required to successfully complete a background check (if he or she is at least 18 years of age) and several other requirements prior to starting in the department.

Information and tools regarding this process can be found on the Office of Human Resources web site, including a step-by-step process guide and form for requesting a volunteer or intern.  If you have questions regarding this process, please email intern-volunteer@northwestern.edu or call 312-503-1584.

Compensation

Why is Differentiating Performance Important?

As the merit increase and performance management processes for staff are occurring throughout the organization, important conversations between employees and their managers are taking place.  These discussions typically revolve around an employee's performance, the corresponding salary increase, and goals and development opportunities for the next year.

Benefits of Differentiating Performance:

  • Differentiation communicates to employees 'where they stand,' in relation to their individual goals, other employees, and within the organization;
  • This strategy recognizes and assists in the retention of key talent;
  • We send the right messages to those performing at the highest levels;
  • Employees are inspired to greater creativity and productivity;
  • Our process provides sound rationale for merit increases, promotions, and other employment actions;
  • Performance rating inflation is potentially reduced; and
  • Fully adopting this strategy becomes a safeguard against reluctance to identify poor performers.

Just as it is critical to have an understanding of the benefits associated with differentiating performance, there are inherent risks associated with not differentiating performance.

Risks of Not Differentiating Performance:

  • Employees don't receive necessary feedback, and may not have clarity on how their performance is valued;
  • Top performers may become discouraged and come to believe that hard work doesn't matter;
  • Low performers may not be aware of where their performance needs improvement and, therefore, are not able to address their development areas;
  • Employees who do not perform to their potential can affect the performance of the entire team; and
  • The organization's achievement potential may not be optimized.

For more information regarding the linkage between performance differentiation and the merit process, please contact your supervisor/manager or the Compensation Consultant that supports your area.
