Derek Blaida to Join ILA's Advocacy Team

The ILA Executive Board has approved a proposal from our long-time Legislative Counsel, Kip Kolkmeier, to expand our efforts in Springfield by adding lobbyist Derek Blaida to our advocacy team.  Blaida is a highly experienced local government advocate with 16 years of experience working with Illinois legislators and executive agency officials. As both a legislative advocate and attorney, Blaida is well known and well respected at the state capitol.  He is a 1998 graduate of the University of Notre Dame and a 2001 graduate of DePaul University College of Law.

Advocacy is a fundamental mission of our association.  Adding Blaida to the team will allow Kolkmeier to serve in the newly created position of ILA General Counsel, as well as continuing to oversee our advocacy efforts.  Blaida will work on the ground in Springfield, participate in Public Policy Committee and Executive Board meetings, and provide crucial updates to our members on the latest Springfield developments.  We welcome him to our team and look forward to using his experience and skills to advance the interests of Illinois libraries.
ILA Joins ISLMA and YALSA in Opposing School Library Cuts
Budget cuts to Chicago Public Schools (CPS) have resulted in only one-third of all high schools having school librarians, and only three certified librarians remain in CPS schools with African American populations of 90% or more. The one piece of good news was the recent reinstatement of DuSable High School's Sara Sayigh after student protests. Several organizations, including ILA, Illinois School Library Media Association (ISLMA), and Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association, have all gone on record opposing the cuts. Library Services to Disabled Vets
A graduate student in Dominican University's GSLIS program is conducting a research study to investigate how disabled veterans are being served in the library.  Please take a few minutes to complete the survey to help libraries address improving services to this important group.  The s
urvey should take about 20 minutes to complete; all answers will be anonymous and survey results will be available in late spring.  Questions? Contact Temidayo Olorunfemi.
