Persepolis and Other Censorship Stories
For August ILA Reporter

As many of you know, Chicago Public School students were instrumental in getting Marjane Satrapi's graphic novel, Perespolis, returned to the shelves this spring.  We'd like to hear from any other school, academic, or public libraries where students have been active in raising awareness or opposing censorship of materials that directly affect their freedom to read.  Your responses will be featured in an article planned for the August issue of the ILA Reporter, so please send to [email protected] by June 21, 2013.
Illinois Public Libraries Are Eligible for Free Energy Assessments and 75% Grants for Energy Efficiency Improvements

Illinois public libraries are eligible for FREE energy assessments, which can then be used to apply for direct grants of up to 75% for financing the energy efficiency improvements.  These services are provided by the Illinois Energy Now Program which utilizing rate-payer-financed funding to assist public entities to reduce their energy costs through investments in new energy efficient lighting, new HVAC systems, and many other energy efficiency measures.  Any public library served by a regulated utility is eligible.  The Smart Energy Design Assistance Center (SEDAC) and the Energy Resources Center (ERC) at the University of Illinois  provide advice and an energy analyses for public facilities throughout Illinois.

Illinois public libraries can benefit from receiving up to 75% state funding for implementing energy reduction measures after an energy assessment. SEDAC and ERC provides their services at no cost to Illinois public and private facilities.  More than 24 Illinois public libraries have already benefited from this no-cost service.  Don't miss out on this opportunity to improve the lighting and comfort of your facility and save money at the same time.  For more information and to schedule your assessment, contact Avelino DeVeyra at the Energy Resources Center, 312-996-6401 or at[email protected].

Rose Allen Inducted as the Latest Illinois Library Luminary

Rose Allen's career at the Mount Prospect Public Library (MPPL) began as a library assistant in 1969. After raising her family, she returned to school, earning a bachelor's degree from Northern Illinois University (NIU) and a master's in Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) while working full time.

She served on the ILA Reaching Forward Committee, ALA Support Staff Round Table, and was instrumental in forming a support staff group at MPPL.  She was elected to the ILA Executive Board and served on numerous ILA committees, including Awards, Membership, Cultural and Racial Diversity committees, and is a recipient of the Jane O'Brien Award recognizing her work.

After becoming teen services librarian at MPPL, her leadership and outreach efforts expanded the library's visibility and her positive impact on the community was acknowledged when awarded the "Toast of the Town" award by the Village of Mount Prospect.  She has served on young adult committees with both ILA and ALA, reviewing books, and speaking, moderating and providing displays at programs.

Allen's love for reading developed at an early age, overcoming Maryland segregation laws that barred her from the library, by reading everything her family could buy, borrow or were given. Mentored by her school librarian, her passion for learning was cultivated.
