Beverly Lynch Is the Newest Illinois Library Luminary

Beverly Lynch, a leading figure in librarianship nationally and in Illinois, has been named the twenty-eighth Illinois Library Luminary.  Luminaries, comprising the Illinois Library Association's roll of honor, are individuals who have made a significant contribution to Illinois libraries and have been recognized by their peers.

"Beverly Lynch's leadership and her many contributions to libraries and librarianship in Illinois are very deserving of this designation as an Illinois Library Luminary," said Robert Wedgeworth, university librarian and professor emeritus, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Lynch has a long and distinguished record in librarianship in Illinois and nationally as a librarian, library educator, and library leader.  She became executive director of the Association of College and Research Libraries, a division of the American Library Association, in 1972. Following that, she served as university librarian and professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago from 1977 to 1989.  Lynch was president of the American Library Association in 1985-86 and twice served as interim president of the Center for Research Libraries in Chicago.

Her tenure at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) includes serving as dean and professor in the Department of Information Studies at UCLA, founding director of the California Rare Book School, and directing the UCLA Senior Fellows Program.  Lynch has received many honors and awards, including the Melvil Dewey Medal (2012) and the Lippincott Award (2009), both awarded by the American Library Association.  She holds a master's degree in library and information science from the University of Illinois and a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin.

Illinois Library Luminaries honor those who have made a significant contribution to Illinois libraries and whose supporters make a contribution of at least $1,000 to the Illinois Library Association Endowment on their behalf. This honor roll for Illinois libraries serves the dual purpose of recognizing outstanding voices in the library community, while creating a legacy through the ILA Endowment to continue their important work.  Please click here to see all current luminaries.

The deadline for applications is 4 p.m. CDT on June 11, 2013, and applications are to be submitted through the Illinois Department of Public Health's Electronic Grant Application Management System (EGrAMS).  Please click here for more information.

Illinois State Board of Education Summer Reading Tool

The free online "Find a Book" utility provides a way for parents and children to quickly and easily search books that match a child's reading level and interests as well as locate a local library carrying each title.

The "Find a Book" utility uses a student's reading score, reported as a Lexile measure, from state standardized tests, including the ISAT, to provide a Lexile range and corresponding list of texts within that range.  The Lexile range for a reader is from 50L above his or her Lexile measure to 100L below.  If a student attempts material above their Lexile range, the text may challenge the student and his or her ability to construct meaning from the reading experience may decrease.  Likewise, material below a reader's Lexile range will provide him or her with little comprehension challenge.

Users of the "Find a Book" search tool can also find appropriate books without a Lexile measure through a search using the child's grade level and comfort with the typical reading materials at that grade level.  The search utility will produce a starting Lexile range that can be further refined.

"Find a Book" also offers a Spanish option that allows users to search all of the titles with Spanish Lexile measures
