The state's health insurance exchange, MNsure, has just announced the process for certifying agents and brokers who wish to sell its health insurance products to individuals or small businesses starting in October. The training will be online and available later this month. It will be incremental and should require a least six hours of education and testing. The certification process will be accepted as six hours of continuing education by the Department of Commerce.
The notice regarding MNsure certification was sent to all agents who had provided MNsure with a "notice of intent" indicating the agent's interested in becoming involved with the exchange. See the notice below.
If you are interested in becoming a MNsure certified agent or broker, it is not too late. You can now complete a "Broker Certification and Roster Form" at the MNsure website. This will assure that you will receive additional future information about exchange enrollment and products as well as the process for becoming a certified agent.

You are receiving this message because your organization expressed interest in participating in MNsure, Minnesota's new health insurance marketplace. Thank you for your 'notice of intent' and interest in partnering with MNsure to assist small employers, individuals and families with application and enrollment in the marketplace. MNsure offers new choices for small employers. For a preview of MNsure's Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP), see the 'MNsure SHOP Process Flow.' More information will be available soon about how agents and brokers can use SHOP to serve their clients. Starting in October 2013, MNsure will open for business. To begin selling through this marketplace, all agents and brokers must become MNsure certified. MNsure certification is new and we'll provide information throughout the process. MNsure certification for agents and brokers includes required certification training. Training will be available online, so you can take courses at your own pace, when it's convenient for you. Training will:
- count toward continuing education credits for licensing
- require approximately 6 hours to complete
- include knowledge assessments
- become available incrementally, beginning in late August
To begin the agent and broker certification process, please:
By submitting these forms you are attesting that you meet the following requirements to legally sell health insurance in Minnesota:
- active licensure under Minnesota Statutes, Chapter 60K, with an accident and health line of authority
- completion of all MNsure broker certification training modules and achievement of passing score
- disclosure of appointments and compensation to consumers
We are requesting electronic submission of the form to help us coordinate a large amount of information in a short amount of time. Once you've submitted the form, MNsure will provide you with the information you need to complete training and the certification process. Thank you.
