Tuesday, October 1
11:30 a.m., Le Paradis Bakery (D Street & Mission)
Outsiders are never admitted to the monastery of Saint Gilbert, where cloistered monks live in prayer. Ironically for a community that has taken a vow of silence, the monks have become famous for their glorious voices, raised in ancient chants whose profound effect on both singer and listener is known as "the beautiful mystery." When the choir director is murdered, the lock on the monastery door is drawn back to admit Chief Inspector Armand Gamache and Jean-Guy Beauvoir to solve the mystery.

As a pastor working in a neighborhood with the highest concentration of murderous gang activity in Los Angeles, Gregory Boyle created Homeboys Industries to provide jobs and job training, so that young people learn the mutual respect that comes through working together.
