Friends,

The Senate Education Committee will begin debate tomorrow on HB 45, the School Choice and Student Opportunity Actthat will allow for the first time the creation of public charter schools in Alabama.  Currently, we are only one of eight states that does not allow for public charter schools.

As BCA President and CEO William J. Canary told Fox 10 in Mobile on Monday, "Very simply, we think parents should have a choice.  It's not the silver bullet, but it's one more component in the holistic approach."

Every single child in Alabama deserves access to a quality education regardless of their race, zip code or income and no one is more aware of their child's needs than his or her parents or guardians.  Students in public charter schools are more likely to graduate from high school than their traditional public school peers and low-income students in public charter schools perform better than their peers in traditional district schools.

Please feel free to share this email with friends, family and colleagues who also believe that Alabama families should have a choice when it comes to what is in the best interest of their child's education.
