From the President

A PLACE AT THE TABLE IS VITAL

With last Thursday's elections finally done and dusted, a couple of the consequences of the results are already reinforcing the SPAA's view that the often time consuming work we put in on the political front is more important than ever. We firmly believe - and our view is already well-known - that the Scottish Government must come forward, as soon as is practical, with the promised 50% cut in APD for Scottish travellers. It looks like the new SNP Government will need to seek support from one or more other parties to get this vital change through. It will be interesting to see if they get it!

And we strongly support the expansion of Heathrow Airport, as by far the best option for ensuring the UK's position as Europe's strongest and most diverse hub, and securing comprehensive connectivity for Scottish travellers. The newly-elected London Mayor is, however, a well-recognised supporter of expansion at Gatwick Airport.

The SPAA must continue to be recognised as a respected and effective voice on behalf of Scotland's travel agents and our leisure and business travellers. As a result of the ongoing work we do - on Consultation submissions and panels, and in our lobbying co-operation with ABTA - we have earned a place at the table when Holyrood and Westminster politicians and stakeholders debate key transport and travel issues. That's going to be more important than ever for the foreseeable future.

Talking of a place at the table - tonight brings the first Heat (in Glasgow) of the SPAA Travel Quiz 2016, with the Edinburgh and Aberdeen Heats following next Tuesday and the Tuesday after. For the EDI and ABZ Heats, there's still time - just - to nominate your Team, so be sure to contact [email protected]. Meanwhile, don't forget the SPAA 'Summer In The City' Charity Event, in Glasgow's Old Fruitmarket on Thursday 16th June. Watch out for your invitation - coming out soon - and book early to ensure your place!
