President's Column

The SPAA's big mid-year bash - Summer In The City - at Glasgow's Fruitmarket on Thursday, was a superb night, and a generous one (it's all about the people!) - raising more than £3,000 for our designated charity - CHAS - which does such great work with very sick kids and their families in Scotland. It was a welcome break from the new challenges we face - every year - in our industry; a chance to relax, catch up and enjoy the company, and above all a chance to party!

Huge thanks are due to sponsors Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines - our headline sponsor, Travelport for the pre-dinner drinks and the hilarious photo-booth and Classic Collection for the after-dinner entertainment - and of course Qatar Airways for a superb raffle prize.

To our own Joanne Dooey, Gayle Gordon and Janice Hogarth - congratulations on putting on such a magic event! Every year, we try to give our Summer night a fresh feel - and the Old Fruitmarket certainly had it all.

On the business front, congratulations to Edinburgh Airport - the Scottish Transport Awards' Airport of the Year for the second year running! (click for more), and it's good to know Virgin Trains will look after the West Coast line for another 3 years. Virgin has shown what stability can do for major rail routes - and they're more important than ever, given changes in Anglo-Scottish airlines and capacity. We support its plans to increase capacity in Standard Class, although an airline-style 'economy plus' product would be welcome - more space without the First Class frills, and we certainly support its plans for superfast Wi-Fi. The rail product works for business people - but we need to be able to work efficiently en route!

If you were there, it was great to see you at Summer In The City, and regardless - check out www.spaa.org / Gallery for all the pictures from the night.
