Victories in Health: Franklin Elementary |
Every year Zone Health recognizes schools that have exceeded the bar of excellence in making student health a priority. In 2012, Franklin Elementary in Mt Airy, NC received the Zone Health award and $1,000 for their wellness program.
From the principal's leadership to the Franklin Fit Moments to the transformation of the cafeteria, Franklin Elementary has shown that schools can make these changes in student health, one step (or push up) at a time.
Prevention Partners will be announcing the 2013 winners at our June Annual Meeting. Stay tuned!

Zone Health: Promoting Health as the Foundation of Academic Success
|
Prevention Partners' work in schools will change lives.
- Transforming School Environments: Zone Health helps schools transform their school environment so that students, faculty and staff have easier access to healthy meals, physically active breaks, and health education. Our web-based platform means we can reach schools when and where they are ready. For example, we trained 50 Buncombe County schools at a recent web-based training.
- Changes in the Classroom: Zone Health has helped transform classrooms to become healthy, active places. Teachers and administrators are coming up with creative solutions, like indoor recess, gardening in class, and yoga ball classrooms, for active learning.
- Leaders Come Together: This February more than a dozen leading organizations across North Carolina came together to discuss opportunities for collaboration to support healthier schools. Co-led by the NC Department of Public Instruction and Prevention Partners, the discussion yielded several priorities for action. To be a part of this exciting group or to see how their collaborations affect your community, visit NC School Health Connection to get involved!

Prevention Reach |
And these schools and districts aren't just participating- they're making real improvements. Three-fourths of the Zone Health teams have leadership support and have developed action plans for healthy changes. Nearly all Zone Health teams see improved grades in one or more wellness grades within six months of starting the program. Several schools will be recognized for the top level of excellence at our June Annual Meeting (stay tuned!).
Most importantly, we're reaching the students. Students like Harlie, who has changed their life thanks to the nutrition education changes in the school cafeteria. "I like to eat apples, grapes, bananas, salads and grilled chicken now." That, from a teen-ager, is amazing.
