Important Reminder From ACR on CT Compliance for Medicare Claims

As you should be aware, the Protecting Access to Medicare Act (PAMA) signed into law in April 2014 included requirements that health care providers comply with the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) XR-29 Standard Attributes on CT Equipment Related to Dose Optimization and Management, also known as MITA Smart Dose. Beginning January 1, 2016, Medicare claims for services performed on CT equipment that is not compliant will receive a 5% payment reduction to the technical component of applicable claims.

The ACR website contains a question and answer document to assist members in understanding these requirements. Click here to access that document.

It has come to our attention that some radiology benefits management companies (RBMs) may be imposing similar requirements for private payer claims. The ACR is interested in hearing from you if you have received notice from any private payers or RBMs that CT scanners must be XR-29 compliant or reimbursement for CT claims will be reduced. We are also interested in hearing how the payers plan to implement the requirement (e.g. a claims modifier similar to Medicare implementation or documentation of compliance).
