Uta Halee Academy students and staff dove into a pink sea of over 10,000 walkers and runners during a recent event in support of the Susan G. KomenŽ Nebraska Race for the Cure. This is one of the largest series of 5k runs in the world and raises funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, celebrates breast cancer survivorship and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease. The Komen Race for the Cure has grown from one local race to a global series of more than 140 races.
Although this was the 21st year the event was held in Nebraska, it was a first for the young women of Uta Halee. The event had a special meaning for the students as several had a personal connection to the disease through members of family and friends. "The girls loved the spirit and support," said Uta Halee Academy Principal Vanessa Meyer, "They were gracious, showed dignity and demonstrated maturity."
Community service is an important element at Uta Halee Academy and the staff and students have provided over 450 hours of service in the community this year. Community events also provide the young women opportunities to utilize their new pro-social skills and develop connections to the community.
