A Compilation of Community News You Can Use

June 1, 2014

Hello,

Some things slow down in the summer, but not the amount of information I receive for the NEWS from HCC. This issue is no exception. There are many jobs, activities and funding opportunities to check out. I hope you find something useful.

What is exceptional about this issue of the NEWS is that it's the last one HCC will publish. June 30 will be my last day as HCC's coordinator.

When I first took the helm at HCC, I had one-on-one meetings with a variety of community leaders to hear their perspectives about the organization's work. I was told by at least two that all HCC did was "make people hold hands and sing Kumbaya." My response was that that wouldn't continue on my watch. I was determined to build HCC into a valuable, sought after resource. I wouldn't be satisfied thinking my work wasn't effective.

Ten years later (yes, it's been that long!) I know HCC is considered a vital resource for health and human service providers in Larimer County, yet I feel I've taken  the organization as far as I can. So it's time to use my experience to help impact the health and well-being of our community in new ways.

I am taking a leap of faith and striking out on my own as KBC Communications+. My specialties include public and media relations, social media management, process facilitation, event planning/implementation (not weddings), bicycle safety education and advocacy, and assorted other areas of technical assistance.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve you. You have made my job so fulfilling and I hope we can stay in touch.

Through June 30, you can reach me as you always have--through UCHealth email and at 970-218-0216. After that date, my email address will be kim.kbccommunications@gmail.com; my phone number will remain the same.

Forever in Health!

Plant It Forward to help neighbors in need

Plant It Forward is a joint effort between the Food Bank and Gardens on Spring Creek. The program asks backyard gardeners to plant an extra row of produce to donate to the Food Bank to help feed neighbors in need - with the majority of those being seniors, families with young children and single parent households. In 2013, the program yielded 11,707 pounds of fresh produce. This year's goal is 15,000 pounds. No donation is too small. The Food Bank for Larimer County will accept fresh produce donations Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. and the Gardens on Spring Creek will accept produce donations on Saturdays from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and Sundays noon-5 p.m. All of the donated fresh produce will be distributed at the Food Bank to Larimer County to residents who are food insecure. Summer meals for low-income kids
With the school year ending, many kids may be left without consistent nutrition options over the summer. According to Feeding America, 13.4% of Larimer County residents are food insecure, meaning they lack enough food for a healthy life. With over 1,000 students in Larimer County considered homeless, there is no doubt that many of them are food insecure also. The good news is, there are programs to help. The Food Bank for Larimer County's Kids Cafe program will be serving FREE meals to low-income children ages 3-18 at several locations throughout Fort Collins, Loveland, Estes Park and Wellington. Kids Cafe programs meet at safe and familiar locations where kids can also be involved in educational, recreational and social activities. Learn more.

Seeking individuals passionate about youth/family leadership & civic engagement
In late April, a community group came together to explore the value of supporting a family leadership and civic engagement initiative. The group agreed to move forward in engaging more community representatives, including youth, in an action planning process. Please take a moment to review a brief overview of our dialogue and thoughts from a youth representative in attendance. Some highlights include: why this work is important to our community, who needs to be at the table and assessment of assets those present bring to the initiative. A second community meeting is being planned for June or July. To learn more, contact Jacque Miller, Family and Community Development, Colorado State University Extension, 970-498-6014.
