Pastor's Note

SUMMER'S  JOY

One of the premier writers of contemporary Christian spirituality is Thomas Merton. He persistently pushes me to think outside my spiritual 'box.' He wrote, "Do not look for rest in any pleasure, because you were not created for pleasure: you were created for joy. And if you do not know the difference between pleasure and joy, you have not yet begun to live."

Many of us spend large sums of money in the hopes of finding 'pleasure.' We travel, shop, and indulge ourselves, especially during the summer vacation season and around Christmas. And then, we wonder why we come to the end of those times with a vaguely empty, unsatisfied feeling and the unspoken thought that we just didn't get all that much out of it.

I talked to my daughter last night.  She lives in New Orleans, a town with a reputation as a tourist place where you can eat, drink, and indulge yourself in almost any way. But everyday life, with its challenges, is about the same there as it is anywhere else.

One friend of hers just experienced the death of her father and was in deep grief. Another was recovering from massive surgery and desperate to have someone drive him around a bit so he could get out of the house for awhile.  Someone else was sick and needed some homemade soup. Jennifer was talking about the way she was trying to help her friends. She concluded with, 'You know, Mom, I get my joy from helping them get through what they're going through.'   The apostle Paul wrote, "The kingdom of God is not food and drink, but righteousness, and peace, and joy through the Holy Spirit." (Romans 14:17)

Are you looking for some real joy this summer? Let the Holy Spirit move you to making a difference for good in the life of someone else.

Blessings to all, Pastor Allyson

Thank You - 1

I am home and so incredibly happy to be back around my wonderful husband and sweet babies again.  I cannot wait until I am well enough to make it to service and give everyone a huge hug for all the wonderful help we have received from our church family. We are so blessed. God led us to a wonderful church to become part of and we couldn't be happier.
God bless!

Reading the Scriptures

8 The people all responded together, "We will do everything the LORD has said." So Moses brought their answer back to the LORD. 9 The LORD said to Moses, "I am going to come to you in a dense cloud, so that the people will hear me speaking with you and will always put their trust in you." Then Moses told the LORD what the people had said.
