THE SIXTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

Almighty God, you have built your Church upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone: Grant us so to be joined together in unity of spirit by their teaching, that we may be made a holy temple acceptable to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Recently, I was reminded by a poem by Mary Oliver:
What can we do about God, who makes and then breaks every god-forsaken, beautiful day?
What can we do about all those graves
In the woods, in old pastures in small towns in the bellies of cities?
God's heavy fooysteps through the bracken through the bog through the dark wood his breath like a swollen river
his switch, lopping the flowers, forgive me, Lord, how I
still, sometimes,
crave understanding.

Entering another week, I hope that our craving for understanding, like Oliver's, may never cease.

God Bless,

Mark+

I AM A LIFE THAT WAS CHANGED!

Now we look inside, and what we see is that anyone united with the Messiah gets a fresh start, is created new. The old life is gone; a new life burgeons! Look at it! All this comes from the God who settled the relationship between us and him, and then called us to settle our relationships with each other. God put the world square with himself through the Messiah, giving the world a fresh start by offering forgiveness of sins. God has given us the task of telling everyone what he is doing. We're Christ's representatives. God uses us to persuade men and women to drop their differences and enter into God's work of making things right between them. We're speaking for Christ himself now: Become friends with God; he's already a friend with you. (2Corinthians 5:17-20 "The Message" Translation)

Every week we gather around the altar and proclaim the greatest story ever told -- that Jesus Christ, fully God and yet fully human, gave his own life to give us forgiveness, rose from the dead to overcome death itself, returned to his Father in heaven, and sent his own spirit to dwell in us. And we know that the Holy Spirit of God is working in our hearts and minds to change us... so that those truths won't just be intellectual assents, but truths that bloom and sing in our souls and make us a little more like Jesus day by day. We are called, as 2nd Corinthians 5 says, to tell everyone what God is doing... present tense-now! At CHT, we're invited to tell everyone what God is doing in the lives of our own parishioners and the lives of those to whom we minister.

Beginning this month, I'll be talking with people from our church community to hear their stories about how God is changing their lives through the ministries and witness of CHT. I'm so thankful to Jim McElwain for volunteering to be first! I'll be looking for more people to share their stories, so if you'd like to share how God has been working in your life and why you love being a part of the CHT community, please send me an email. Please read Jim's story below, and be sure to watch his interview video clip at the end!

_____________________________________________________

"It's a cliché I suppose, but my spiritual life has truly been a journey with many detours, dead ends and even crashes along the way - along with brief periods of enlightenment and fulfillment. But even when not actively being "spiritual" let's say through regular prayer or meditation, I've come to recognize, over the last 5-10 years, a latent spirituality within me. For instance, I generally see the goodness in people. Or when   doing volunteer work in the service of others, I might experience an almost overwhelming sense of peacefulness. Or when serving as an acolyte at Sunday liturgy, feeling no longer alone, but part of the whole, all of us together struggling perhaps, but with a hunger for wholeness and blessedness as part of the Body.
So as I continue my journey, I believe CHT offers me ample opportunity to continue poking around spiritually in so many ways. I think of them as "points of light" that are available to all of us, and can help us live more satisfying and fulfilling lives:

  •  CHT - a diverse and welcoming community. Good people who want to be of service to the community and to one another.
  •  Sermons that challenge, motivate and enlighten. Spirituality I think is both a cerebral and soulful exercise.
  •  Liturgies that are joyous celebrations with a superb choir and music program
  •  Adult education headed up by priests who are knowledgeable and committed teachers and wonderful facilitators of dialogue among the participants. ( Here I find knowledge, insight and revelation),
  •  Enumerable opportunities to volunteer in the service of others.
  •  Clergy that care about you, and I've been the beneficiary of counseling and encouragement that has made a real difference in my life. As one long time parishioner said to me, "Mark is a very, very good priest.""

RECTOR SEARCH AND DISCERNMENT UPDATES
Dear Friends,

As of June 19th, we will have completed field visits to 6 candidates, and by the time you read this, we will have identified 3 finalists who will visit with the committee and vestry in Philadelphia in the next few weeks. As a reminder, we are happy to discuss details about our process, but we cannot provide any information about candidates.

Continue to pray for our committee and for those who are considering whether God is calling them to join us in ministry.
