AN INTRODUCTION TO ICONOGRAPHY

REMINDER:

As an introduction to our class on iconography beginning this fall, Susan Kelly von Mendicus will offer a presentation on the history and writing of icons during adult Sunday School hour on Sunday, September 13.

Ms. Von Mendicus is on the faculty at Villanova and does frequent classes on calligraphy and icon writing (painting) in churches throughout the northeast.

For the class this fall, it is important to note that prior experience or ability is absolutely not a requirement. It is a spiritual discipline, one cultivated for centuries by our Eastern brothers and sisters, and many of the most famous icons were written by those who had few obvious artistic gifts. Although we are trying to include other churches in the deanery, the charge for CHT members is $370 for the semester, $200 less than the regular fee.

Working with icons is a wonderful spiritual experience, and I encourage all to take advantage of this deeply enriching experience.

Rector Search and Discernment Updates

Look Inward, Look Forward

Please join your Vestry and Rector Search Committee
as we take the next important step in our discernment process.

All are invited to attend and participate in a special workshop
to build a parish-wide consensus for
God's calling to us: who we are, and where God wants us to go.
This is a chance for your voice to be heard,
for you to speak your concerns,
and to help us determine our path for the future.

Sunday, September 20th , 11:00am - 3:00pm
(Centennial Room)

Our consultant The Rev. Richard Ullman will be leading us
through an important process at the workshop.
He will also be our guest preacher at the 11 am worship service.
Please note, the 11am worship service will be about 45 minutes, so that the workshop may begin at Noon.

Please spread the word to fellow parishioners about this important meeting and join in this community of givers who know how valuable their ideas, spirit, and leadership are to this process.

CHT has worked with Broad Street Ministries since 2013 and currently pledges to provide five volunteers every third Saturday of the month.

If you're able, please sign up on
VolunteerHub:(broadstreetministry.volunteerhub.com) or on the sign-up on the board at the back of the sanctuary by September 10th so that we know if we need to recruit more volunteers-thank you!

FILL-THE-BUS!
back-school-bus.jpg
As in years past CHT has committed to participation in Fill-the-Bus, a wonderful program sponsored by Episcopal Community Services for students in under-resourced schools in our area. This year we are collecting supplies for three schools in Feltonville, supplies that will be used throughout the year and will provide much-needed financial relief to students and teachers.

In the back of the sanctuary, there is a board with Post-It notes describing items to be purchased. Simply take one of the notes, purchase the item and place it in the bin beneath the sign. Your participation will benefit many students and their families.

Thank you in advance for your generosity!

CONCERT: THE DIVINE HAND ENSEMBLE FOR THE POPE

The Divine Hand Ensemble have been asked to perform a concert for the Pope at CHT!

Sunday, Sept.27th at 6:00pm

Who better to honor and perform for His Holiness, Pope Francis, than Philadelphia's own Divine Hand Ensemble? The Divine Hand presents a heavenly evening of sacred music, performed in one of Philadelphia's oldest churches, timed to close the Pope's visit to Philadelphia.

The DHE features a rare instrument, the theremin, to sing like the voice of an angel. Concert Thereminist, Mano Divina, bends electricity with his hands to produce powerfully moving music that touches all who see and hear him.

The ensemble specializes in classical timeless repertoire by the greatest composers of all time.

This event is sure to sell out quickly. Take advantage of the early release price now.

BYZANTINE ICON WRITING WORKSHOP

Byzantine Iconwriting Workshop for beginning students, Archangel Michael

Icon will be modeled after the prototype by the hand of St. Andre Rublev

Emphasis is placed on personal spiritual discipline and growth through a study of Christian Church teachings and principles as practiced in the making of icons. The Prosopon School is founded by and the principles and methods are under the direction of master iconographer Vladislav Andrejev.

PAPAL WEEKEND
As most of you know, the weekend of September 25-27 will be a challenging one for many of us, affecting our mobility in and out of the city.

Regrettably, it will affect the worship of all Center City churches on the 27th, including our services at CHT.

Understanding that many will not be able to attend that day, we will have two "said" services that day at our usual times of 8:30 and 11:00am, with Christian education between the services for those who can join us.

Please bear with us as we negotiate these disruptions and continue with our regular schedule on October 4.

TIBETAN DANCE & MUSIC BENEFIT CONCERT

Enjoy an evening of modern and traditional Tibetan dance and music for a great cause, with proceeds benefiting the Community Center Project of the Tibetan Association of Philadelphia.

The group will perform a variety of classical and traditional Tibetan dance and music, such as the Yak Dance, Tibetan Hunter Dance, Tibetan Good Luck Dance, and classical songs.
