Remembering Dr. Martin Luther King

Jan 15, 1929 - April 4, 1968

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.

Shalom!

On April 4, 1968, 45 years ago, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was shot and killed in Memphis, TN.  This week, on April 1, 38 African American and white teens from Beth Emet Synagogue and Second Baptist Church visited the sacred ground of Memphis' Loraine Motel to remember the vision of Dr. King, and to ensure that his dream, and the dream of thousands of other freedom fighters, will not be forgotten. For six days, we traveled through the Southern United States on a trip that challenged us to look to our past and understand our history, to confront the reality of race in America today, and to look forward at what can be.  Please keep an eye out for upcoming information about a teen-led community share-back session this Spring and many more reflections on our Sankofa trip.

Speaking of partnership, look below for upcoming programming for Unity Weekend (April 19-21), an interfaith partnership between Beth Emet, Second Baptist, St. Nicolas, and the Unitarian Church.

Finally, remember that great programming can only happen if it truly meets the needs of our community.  Please check out information about a JCFS sponsored focus group with the LGBT community of Chicagoland at the bottom of this email -- adults, parents, teens, and service providers are all encouraged to participate.

Please note, I will be out of the office Monday, April 8 to Saturday, April 13.  For any time sensitive information please contact Marci or Debbie in the school office.

Onward and upward,

Unity Weekend: Three days of community service projects together
April 19-21, 2013

With this past week's joint Beth Emet - Second Baptist teen Sankofa trip, our communities' partnership continues to deepen.  Along with St. Nicolas and the Unitarian Church, our four communities can truly live out the vision of partnership and unity inspired by the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, who was assassinated this week 45 years ago: "We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly."

Together
we can build a better world.
