Volunteer Spotlight
At the heart of GOTR are amazing volunteers whose commitment and passion change the lives of thousands of girls throughout the St. Louis region each year.

Meet one of our superstar coach volunteers . . .

Marcia Billhartz

Coach

William Holliday Elementary School

How did you first hear about Girls on the Run?

I first heard about GOTR while attending a character education site visit to a nearby elementary school. I was so inspired by the young girls who told us about the program that I asked my principal the next day if it would be possible to start a site at our school. I received so much support from her and other faculty members that we began with a team the next season!

Why did you decide to be a coach?

I thought that being a coach would be a way to stay connected to previous students and share girl time! I also wanted to help girls feel good about who they are. The positive energy this program brings is contagious! I felt the program would help girls become more confident and remember it is our unique qualities that make us all special!

What inspires you?

I am inspired daily by my two boys, I want them to grow up with confidence and courage to make good choices and become outstanding young men.

December 2013

Amazing 2013

Year in Review

"Once a Girl on the Run, always a Girl on the Run!", exclaimed Westchester Elementary GOTR coach Kathy Collier-Paul at the finish line of our Fall 2013 5k. This sentiment truly captures what Girls on the Run St. Louis is about: empowering girls for a lifetime of healthy living!

This year we have much to celebrate and the numbers are just part of the story:

  • 6,186 girls served from more than 200 schools across Missouri and Illinois
  • 4,425 scholarships provided, totaling $350,000
  • More than 2,000 volunteers coached, worked the 5k, sorted t-shirts, organized supply boxes and more
  • 13,000+ runners crossed the finish line at the 5k, for many it was just the beginning of an amazing Girls on the Run journey
  • Our 10th birthday celebration culminated with our largest season in history
  • Our bi-annual races continue to be the largest timed 5k events in St. Louis
  • The GOTR-STL council is the third largest council in the international network of more than 200 councils

What began in 2002 with 20 amazing girls and our courageous council founder, Jill Indovino, meeting at a park bench, is now an integral part of communities and families across 19 counties in Eastern Missouri and Western Illinois. We celebrate the amazing year that 2013 has been for GOTR-STL with a sense of gratitude as we embark upon our second decade and the incredible milestone of empowering more than 20,000 girls across the Greater St. Louis Area with our life-changing program.

As we celebrate the wonderful year that 2013 has been for our girls, coaches, families and community, we honor the gift that you have given in your time, support and commitment to make it possible. Please consider honoring your Girl on the Run, your coach or your personal commitment to our mission by making an end-of year gift. Every gift makes a difference. We simply can't "run" without you!

We are grateful that GOTR-STL has been embraced by so many and we are committed to ensuring that every single girl on each team knows that she is always a Girl on the Run!

I look forward to a wonderful, Superstar 2014 for Girls on the Run St. Louis!

Sincerely,

Courtney Berg, LCSW

Executive Director

Girls on the Run St. Louis envisions a world where all girls will value themselves, lead healthy and purposeful lives and influence the next generation. We help girls to grow in their identity and self-esteem, and to develop their competence, confidence, character, compassion and will to care. Our girls develop positive connections with peers and adults, and they learn the value of making meaningful contributions to their community.

This year, we invite you to join us in celebrating the impact we can have as a community, giving and collaborating to bring about this vision for a better world.

Molly Barker Visits

We were excited and honored to welcome Molly Barker, founder of Girls on the Run, to St. Louis on Dec. 4 and 5, 2013. It was a busy, fun-filled visit!

Molly was able to visit an end of season banquet at a school and spend time with the team learning about why they love GOTR-STL!

We were able to show our coaches and volunteers just how grateful we are for all the work they do throughout the year. On Dec. 4, our national sponsor, Athleta, hosted a volunteer appreciation event. Not only did the volunteers have some one-on-one time with Molly to share stories and inspiration; Athleta provided a wonderful discount to honor our volunteers.

Molly was able to connect with St. Louis media to film a public service announcement with FOX Sports Midwest, help tell the GOTR-STL story and discuss the impact we've had on the community  - even commenting we may be "the best GOTR council out there"!  We were able to conclude her visit with a fundraising event where Molly shared the profound impact GOTR-STL has made in the community and helped to raise scholarship funds for even more girls to participate this coming season.
Always wanted to be a coach?
Register to be a Spring 2014 coach NOW!

Would you like the opportunity to make a difference in a girl's life?

Spring 2014 will be our largest Girls on the Run season yet and we're seeking energetic individuals to serve as volunteer coaches for girls at sites across the St. Louis Metropolitan area.

Volunteer coaches work directly with 3rd-8th grade girls to deliver the Girls on the Run and Girls on Track programs.

Coaches lead the girls through fun and active lessons while helping them prepare for the Girls on the Run 5k event at the end of the season and a lifetime of healthy living.

All coaches are required to  REGISTER ONLINE and NEW coaches are required to select and attend one of the two training sessions on Saturday, Jan. 4 or Sunday, Jan.12 during the registration process.

Learn more about the different coaching roles and responsibilities here.

Contact the GOTR-STL office if you are interested in coaching and want to learn more.
Volunteers Needed
One Step at a Time We'll Cross the Finish Line

Do you want to get involved in Girls on the Run St. Louis but are unable to commit to volunteering on a regular schedule? We have many volunteer opportunities throughout the year that are perfect for the working (wo)man or a student on the go!

Volunteering can be done on a variety of dates and times and we have a lot of fun projects to get involved with:

Program supply sorting and counting
What:  Volunteers will help us count and sort supplies for the spring program supply boxes.

Coaches Training Folder Stuffing

What:  3-4 volunteers needed to help stuff folders with information and handouts to share at coaches training.

Supply Box Building

What:  4-6 volunteers needed to assemble supply boxes for the spring season. What is a supply box? It is a storage tote filled with all of the materials coaches need to deliver the lessons and activities to the girls.

All volunteer projects take place at the GOTR-STL office:
