GOTR 5k logo revised
11/16/13

Mark your calendars for the Fall 2013 Girls on the Run 5k. Join us on Saturday, Nov. 16 in Downtown St. Louis!

Volunteer Spotlight

At the heart of GOTR are amazing volunteers whose commitment and passion change the lives of thousands of girls throughout the St. Louis region each year.

Meet one of our superstar volunteers:

Amy Powell

How did you first hear about Girls on the Run?

I heard about Girls on the Run from a parent of a girl in our school.  This parent was looking for a program or group for her daughter to become a part of and she was convinced Girls on the Run was it.  I looked on the Girls on the Run website and immediately became excited about the program.  I went to the school principals and unbeknownst to me, they had heard of the program as well. Together we became excited and wanted this program in our school.

Why did you decide to be a coach?

After looking over the Girls on the Run St. Louis website, I instantly wanted to be part of the program.  I believe in the principles of GOTR and the lessons being taught. I have two daughters and felt this is a program I would want them in. The program works wonderfully with my schedule and not only did GOTR seem extremely fun, it also taught many lessons that our girls need along with support and guidance in the lessons.

Coaches Training Sessions A Success!

Fall coaches are ready to run

Girls on the Run St. Louis (GOTR-STL) held two new coach trainings and trained more than 275 new GOTR & GOT coaches at MICDS on August 3 and August 11. New coaches learned the ropes of Girls on the Run and participated in sample lessons during a half-day training.

Returning coaches completed a short online refresher with program information as well as policy and procedure changes.  Returning coaches were given the opportunity to attend a best practices sharing and season kick-off at the new GOTR-STL office.  This was a great opportunity for returning coaches to share ideas about motivating and encouraging girls throughout the season.

The GOTR-STL staff would like to extend appreciation to all volunteer coaches.  Girls on the Run and Girls on Track coaches truly make a difference in the lives of young girls across the St. Louis region.

Proven Impact

Program evaluation demonstrates GOTR makes a positive impact

The mission of GOTR-STL is to empower girls for a lifetime of healthy living Our physical activity-based positive youth development program for girls in 3rd-8th grade is designed to develop and enhance girls' social, mental, emotional and physical competencies to equip them to successfully navigate life experiences.

GOTR-STL, in partnership with researchers at Washington University's George Warren Brown School of Social Work and the Prevention Research Center, developed a pre- and post-evaluation assessment, which was administered by many of our amazing coaches at select, geographically and socioeconomically diverse samples of sites. The evaluation in the spring 2013 season measured the effectiveness of our curriculum and the programs impact. More than 1,400 girls from 76 sites participated in the evaluation.

The evaluation showed that after a season of participation in Girls on the Run, girls reported:

  • Increases in self-confidence, positive attitude and being satisfied with themselves.
  • Dramatic increases in feeling proud of themselves and keeping an open mind.
  • Feeling as though they can make a difference in their community.
  • Increases in how they thought of themselves:
    • As a good teammate
    • As a good listener, and
    • Someone who handles disagreements with an open mind
  • Being physically active.  Increase in percentage of girls who participate in at least 20 minutes of vigorous intensity physical activity on five or more days of the week not including GOTR practices.
  • Less non-active leisure time.  Decrease in percentage of girls watching TV/DVDs, playing computer and video games and using the internet for three or more hours per day.

It is very exciting to see data that validates the positive impact of Girls on the Run! GOTR-STL can say with even greater confidence that the program is making a difference in these girls' lives and empowering them for a lifetime of healthy living. Many thanks to all of our coaches who are delivering this impactful program in their communities and who helped implement this evaluation!
