GOTR 5k logo revised
11/16/13

Mark your calendars for the Fall 2013 Girls on the Run 5k. Join us on Saturday, November 16 in Downtown St. Louis!

Volunteer Spotlight

At the heart of GOTR are amazing volunteers whose commitment and passion change the lives of thousands of girls throughout the St. Louis region each year.

Meet one of our superstar volunteers:

Ty Kanoya

How I was introduced? I was pulled by my ears into the GOTR-STL organization by GOTR-STL coach, Wendie Cummings. Well that's not true, but she was the one who recruited me to volunteer as a roving photographer so that a lot of photos would be captured up close. Wendie and I had met through the St. Louis Track Club. I ended taking a lot of photographs at their races because I felt their website needed more than just one or two photos that were captured at their events. One thing led to another, Wendie saw my penchant for capturing unique shots and told me that I had to do the same thing for GOTR-STL and here I am still doing it several years later!

What keeps me coming back?

Seeing all the young girls having fun and being able to finish the race as well as enjoy the post-activities. After all, memories captured are forever, right?  In addition, seeing all the coaches help the girls get to the finish line with great big smiles are fun to watch.

Two interns that support our mission
Shout out to our talented interns

This summer, Girls on the Run St. Louis is grateful to have two talented interns supporting our mission and working closely with the GOTR-STL staff on various project responsibilities.

Emily Franz brings both a familiarity and passion for the GOTR program to GOTR-STL. As a student at the University of Notre Dame, Emily served as the Campus Liaison for the newly established GOTR Michiana council. Along with fellow students, Emily led fundraising initiatives, planned a variety of events and held the council's fall 5k on Notre Dame's campus. After completing her bachelor's in psychology, Emily moved to St. Louis and has been an elementary school teacher. As she explained, "I was looking for an internship during my break from teaching this summer and I thought Girls on the Run would be a great fit. Not only is GOTR-STL an awesome organization, but I would love to go into nonprofit work in the future." Emily is working with both program and development teams, compiling and analyzing data in order to gain a better understanding of the demographics of sites, participants and supporters for our fast approaching fall 2013 season.

Like Emily, Danielle Sitze was drawn to the mission of GOTR-STL and the opportunity to match her personal and professional interests. "I believe that it is so important to support our youth by being positive role models and help mentor them towards healthy life decisions, both mentally and physically." She is currently working towards her master of social work at St. Louis University with a community concentration and nonprofit administration certification; her goal is to work in program delivery for a nonprofit, eventually growing into a leadership position. Danielle's work with the program team this summer includes updating program spreadsheets, assembling helpful hints for coaches, compiling and analyzing demographic information and volunteer data to identify trends, supply inventory and assisting with new coaches training. Danielle will continue her internship with GOTR-STL through the fall season, as well as complete her first half marathon!

Thank you to Emily and Danielle for helping us to empower girls for a lifetime of healthy living!
Coaches Wanted!
Do you want to make a difference in a girl's life?

Our program would not be possible without the amazing volunteers who donate their time and talent. Volunteer coaches work directly with 3rd - 8th grade girls to deliver the Girls on the Run and Girls on Track programs. Coaches lead the girls through fun and active lessons while helping them prepare for the Girls on the Run 5k event at the end of the season. You can help empower girls for a lifetime of healthy living!

Girls on Track participants
