Volunteer Spotlight
|
At the heart of GOTR are amazing volunteers whose commitment and passion change the lives of thousands of girls throughout the St. Louis region each year.
Meet one of our superstar volunteers: Taryn Crowley
Taryn has been coaching with GOTR-STL for three seasons. As a counselor in the Parkway School District, her time is split between two elementary schools: Hanna Woods and Sorrento Springs. Taryn brought the program to Sorrento Springs in the spring of 2012 and to Hanna Woods in the fall of the same year.
Read what else Taryn had to say in her own words ...
How did you first hear about Girls on the Run?
It is embarrassing to admit but, when I first heard about Girls on the Run I was completely clueless! Some colleagues shared that their building "isn't a Girls on the Run school." I had no idea what a "Girls on the Run school" was! Being a school counselor, I was unsure if this was something I was supposed to have knowledge of, but made up my mind that I would find out. That evening I went home and Googled it.
Within 10 minutes, not only did I know that I had to be a part of this program but I had to get this program started at BOTH of my schools. I quickly sent an email to my principals and decided whichever one responded first got the program. Sorrento Springs held their first season in spring 2012 and Hanna Woods had their first season in fall 2012!
Why did you decide to be a coach?
There are close to 100 reasons as to why I decided to become a coach-one for each girl that I have supported on Girls on the Run. Empowering the girls and increasing their self-esteem is probably one of the most valuable skills we can teach. As a counselor, this is one more way for me to help students at the elementary level who struggle with their self-image. I believe a program like this would have had a huge impact on me growing up as I watch our girls become more self-aware, self-assured and self-confident. This program is all about the girls.
For me, Girls on the Run reminds us ALL how truly special, unique and awesome we are!

Spring 2013 Season Rookie Site Spotlight
Every Monday and Wednesday afternoon for the past eight weeks there's a new thunderous sound coming from Windsor Intermediate Center in Imperial, MO. It's 55 pairs of girls' feet pounding the pavement coupled with enthusiasm and a greater sense of confidence.
That's right...55 girls their very first season as a Girls on the Run St. Louis site! You might wonder how they do it. Well, Windsor has had a group of dedicated, organized school teachers, staff and administrators from their initial contact with GOTR-STL in the fall. They knew the girls would fully embrace GOTR and wanted to be able to support all girls who had a desire to participate.
Here's what Jamie Brockmeier, Head Coach and Michelle Dreyer, Assistant Coach had to say about their experience as first-time Girls on the Run St. Louis coaches:
Why did you want to bring GOTR to the girls at your school?
Jamie: I wanted to bring Girls on the Run to Windsor because I am passionate about health and fitness. I felt that it would be the perfect opportunity to instill physical, emotional and spiritual health into the girls. I believed that with the help of GOTR I could be a positive influence and empower young girls to activate their inner potential on all levels.
What has been your favorite lesson so far?
Michelle: My favorite lesson is Lesson 4: "Positive Self-Talk and Why I Choose It!" It was so much fun because during our workout all of the girls were constantly shouting out positive comments about themselves. They were all plugged into their "Girls on the Run" cord and the positive energy traveling throughout the gym was contagious!
What has been the most rewarding part of the program for you personally?
Jamie: At 25 years old, I am learning more about myself through the lessons and reflection time. The girls are opening my eyes to embrace diversity and to be more confident in my daily decisions. I constantly find myself more optimistic, compassionate, and open-hearted. My team has grown leaps and bounds, and it makes my heart smile when I see my girls standing up for themselves, walking down the hall with more confidence, and building new relationships with peers.
Michelle: I find myself reflecting on topics we discuss during our lessons together and when I'm running on my own as well! I have witnessed the girls making connections from other lessons while discussing certain topics. Building relationships with the girls, learning with them, running with them, and growing together as a team has been such a gratifying experience!
GOTR at Windsor has been an overwhelming success! The program wouldn't exist without dedicated volunteer coaches and amazing school support. Thank you so much for making a difference in the lives of the girls at Windsor Intermediate School.
