Volunteer Spotlight
At the heart of GOTR are amazing volunteers whose commitment and passion change the lives of thousands of girls throughout the St. Louis region each year.

Meet one of our superstar volunteers: Sharlene Woerther

     Sharlene Woerther

Sharlene has been coaching with GOTR-STL for more than five years. She has just transitioned to Head Coach of a Girls on Track team at Bryan Middle School in the Francis Howell School District. Before leading the team at Bryan Middle she coached a Girls on the Run team at Independence Elementary.

Read what else Sharlene had to say in her own words ...

How did you first hear about Girls on the Run?

I was in Knoxville, TN for a half-marathon I was running. My daughter, Tess, and I were at packet pick-up and saw a booth for the local GOTR council. After talking with the coaches, we were both interested in learning more and she was determined she wanted to join. She was only in second grade at the time.

Why did you decide to be a coach?

After learning about the program and seeing how much my daughter wanted to be a part of GOTR, I checked to see if this program was offered at her school. Once I found out it did not, I contacted the GOTR-STL office to see how to get one started. They put me in contact with a wonderful coach in St. Charles and I was able to ask her tons of questions. It was when I attended one of her practices that I knew I would love to be a coach.

5k Superstars

Add extra meaning to your May race!

Superstar: noun - person who uses his or her talent and motivation to inspire the community and help raise up individuals to achieve their dreams (YOU!)

5k Superstars are men and women who will run the Girls on the Run 5k on May 11, 2013 in support of the Girls on the Run St. Louis scholarship program.

Whether you are running the 5k as a family member, practice partner or community participant, you can help spread the word and raise money for scholarships benefiting Girls on the Run St. Louis.

Each 5k Superstar receives a personal fundraising page but has no fundraising minimum. Runners that raise $100 or more by race day will receive a Girls on the Run technical running shirt. All funds raised benefit the Girls on the Run St. Louis scholarship fund.

The Right Step to Running

GOTR-STL provides shoes to girls to help level the playing field

"I feel like I'm floating!" said a participant when she put on a new pair of shoes this season, courtesy of GOTR-STL, to replace an old pair of too-small shoes. In an effort to ensure all our Girls on the Run and Girls on Track participants have a fun, safe experience, we work to provide appropriate running shoes to those girls that may not have been able to afford them.

We are grateful to New Balance and Big River Running Co., for helping us provide more than 200 pairs of shoes to girls this school-year!

Wish List: Would you also like to help a girl make a run for the finish line?  $40 will provide a pair of running shoes to a girl next season. Donate online here.

Measurable Community Impact

The mission of Girls on the Run St. Louis (GOTR-STL) is to
empower girls for a lifetime of healthy living. Our Girls on the Run curriculum focuses upon the whole girl and stresses the importance of equally developing the emotional, mental, social and physical aspects of every girl to create a well-balanced, whole person.

GOTR-STL developed a pre- and post-assessment in partnership with practitioners and researchers at Washington University's George Warren Brown School of Social Work and the Prevention Research Center. Our study in the Fall of 2012 measured the effectiveness of our curriculum and our program's impact. Over 1,200 girls from 75 sites participated in the study.

Our research showed that after a season of Girls on the Run, girls reported:

  • Increases in self-confidence
  • Significant increases in body size satisfaction
  • Feeling as though they can make a difference in their community
  • Are physically active:
    • Screen time (watching TV, playing computer games or using the internet 3 or more hours per day) decreased
    • Nearly 50% of girls participate in at least 20 minutes of vigorous intensity physical activity 5 or more days each week (NOT including GOTR-STL practices)
  • Girls self-reported as:
    • A good teammate
    • A good listener, and
    • Someone who handles disagreements with an open mind

It is very exciting to see data that validates that Girls on the Run works! We can say with even greater confidence that the program is making difference in these girls' lives and preparing them for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. Thanks to all of our coaches who are delivering this life-changing program in their communities and who helped us implement this evaluation.

Thanks again for your support. We can't run without you!

Sincerely,
Girls on the Run St. Louis Staff
