| GOTR is Green! |
Girls on the Run St. Louis partnered with St. Louis Earth Day Recycling On the Go to decrease the environmental impact of this fall's 5k.
With the help of dedicated volunteers and race participants, we collected 5.5 cubic yards of recyclables and .66 cubic yard of compost (bananas). With only 5 cubic yards of landfill waste produced, 65% of the total total waste collected will be recycled or composted! A huge thank you to St. Louis Earth Day and especially to Bill Parmentier and race committee member Molly James who worked to ensure our efforts to go green!

Courage, Character, Creativity & Confidence Abound!
|
| | Girls on the Run dove under the "C" in the streets of Downtown St. Louis
More than 4,500 runners crossed the finish line of the Girls on the Run 5k on Saturday, November 17 many with tutus and colored hair.
The fall Girls on the Run 5k in St. Louis was a smashing success with approximately 9,000 people gathering downtown to run, cheer and support the more than 2,200 girls in the Girls on the Run program this fall in 109 schools across the metropolitan area.
The weather was beautiful, but the smiles and sense of pride exuding from the finishers was even more beautiful. We hope that our runners come away from the race with the feeling that if they can run a 5k, they can do anything!
Feedback We want to hear from you! We are always looking to improve our race. We appreciate your input and highly encourage you to fill out our post-race survey by clicking here. In addition, if you complete the survey you have the option to be entered into a drawing to win a piece of Girls on the Run apparel!

Girls on the Run St. Louis Gives Back

| Winners of the Koman Award for Excellence in Community Service Announced
Part of the Girls on the Run curriculum entails each team conducting a community service project. Girls on the Run St. Louis honors our teams' hard work and creativity through the Koman Award for Excellence in Community Service. We had a record number of entries this season! It's so inspiring to see all of the amazing projects that have happened throughout the St. Louis Metro area. We are pleased to announce the winners!
The first place winner is from McNair Elementary in the Hazelwood School District. This team wrote letters to women in the military at a base in Texas. They wanted to thank them for their service and being positive role models for women. One GOTR participant has a father in the military so this project really hit home! They also included a group photo of the team in each letter. The girls asked a lot of questions in their letters so they are hopeful that someone may write them back!
The second place award goes to Holy Family School & Niedringhaus Elementary, both in Granite City, Illinois. These two teams worked together to assist the Phoenix Crisis Center, a local emergency shelter for women and children. Each team helped to clean out the facility basement in preparation for their "Ultimate Garage Sale" on November 30 and December 1. Both teams were scheduled to clean on different nights because the space was so small in the basement. Niedringhaus went on the first night and sorted through numerous boxes of clothing. Holy Family came the following evening and organized all of the donated towels, bedding and toiletries. The girls made a huge impact and really surprised themselves with all that they accomplished!
Third place is awarded to a team from Boone Elementary in the Lincoln County R-III School District. The project was called "Cleaning Cars for A Cure." The GOTR team cleaned the exterior/interior of all of the vehicles belonging to the school district administration/staff, parents and relatives for donations. All of the donations collected were given to a family at Boone Elementary that recently suffered a medical emergency. The team raised $269 in a few short hours to give to the family! All of the girls felt empowered by the fact that they were able to support a school family that they all know.
Honorable Mentions were awarded to the following teams:
Babler Elementary
Centralia Jr. High
Garrett Elementary
Kellison Elementary
Progress South
Rose Acres Elementary
Signal Hill
Thank you again for all of your hard work in planning and executing your community service projects. The St. Louis Metro area is a better place because of your efforts!
