June 2016 Vol. 9, Issue 7
|
|
Dear ,
June is here and summer is upon us! This is the time with Scouts and leaders everywhere start going into the outdoors to do what Scouts do best. Read through because there are several activities for which you will want to be informed.
|
Roundtable: Thursday, June 2. LAST ONE of the Year! We are going to wind up the year with the usual free BBQ. Starting at 6:00 p.m., there will be a dinner provided by the commissioners. Come and eat! Then following dinner, there will be a short townhall-style meeting and discussion. If you have questions or want to find out what's going on with BSA on a national level as well as locally, you'll want to be in this meeting. Following that meeting is the annual winter camp lottery. Units are drawn based on their Journey to Excellence level and roundtable attendance. You must be present to reserve a spot even if your unit number is drawn.

Endangered Pinewood Derby Race!!!
Every year, the Marin Council has a council pinewood derby race at the Marin County Fair. This race is for all the winners of pack races to run off against other packs, and it is the highlight of the year for many Cub Scouts. However, it is in danger of being cancelled because we have been unable to find people to run it. We need volunteers to set up, run, clean up after the race, as well as conduct 2 check-in days in June for packs to register their cars for the race and provide a track and software. Along with that, if we cancel the race, we may not be able to regain that premium space at the Marin County Fair.
If you can help, please send an email to the council office immediately. We cannot run the race without a team of people to head it up.
Cars that are not in the race can be part of the Marin County Fair pinewood derby car exhibition. Forms are available here on our web site. We'd like to get as many cars from Cub Scouts at the Fair as possible. What works well is if one person from each pack collects the cars with the entry forms and brings them en masse to the council office before the due date.

Cub Scout Camping
Family Fiesta and the Talako OA Lodge PowWow was a resounding success! Many thanks to Leigh Ann Bostian, program director; Chuck Dundas, camp director; Kaleb Sante, first aid officer, and Erik Landsness for working with the OA to bring the PowWow to Family Fiesta.
We had tremendous support from Troops 42, 59, 73, 76, 200, and 2000.
Finally a huge thank you to Talako Lodge Order of the Arrow for putting on the PowWow and providing program and support. The boys, siblings, and the adults really enjoyed it.

Come Join Us on the Ranges
Archery and BB Gun RangemastersThe council shooting sports committee will be conducting both archery and BB gun rangemaster trainings in June. The purpose of the training is to qualify individuals to assist with managing those ranges in support of Cub Scouting in Marin. All the Cub Scout events and activities that the council operates (such as Family Fiesta, Tiger Cub Expedition, Cub Scout Turkey and Bunny Shoots, etc.) require volunteers to run the ranges. The archery training will also qualify someone to run a range for Boy Scouts and Venturers. Upon completion, participants will receive a pocket certificate, which is valid for 2 years. Once trained, rangemasters are asked to volunteer at least 8 hours a year to staff the archery or BB gun ranges. Just think how excited and proud your Scout will be to see his parent leading a range! The dates are (sign up soon!):Archery--Saturday, June 11, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Cost is $40. This includes BSA and National Archery Association Level 1. BB Gun--Saturday, June 18, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Cost is $30. Both trainings are at Camp Tamarancho. Must be 18 or older to be a rangemaster. Bring your lunch. No personal firearms are needed or allowed. For more information, contact CJ Carrillo, 415-389-8945, 415-637-8625. Range Safety Officer (RSO) TrainingThe council is offering a class for NRA certification as a Range Safety Officer on Saturday, July 9, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The class will be held at Camp Tamarancho. Cost to cover the training materials is $20.00.
It is a requirement when shooting pellet or .22 caliber rifles on the BSA rifle ranges that there be a minimum of two certified adults to oversee the shooting operations. One must be a NRA Range Safety Officer and the other must be a NRA Rifle Instructor. The responsibility of the RSO is to oversee the safety aspects of the shooting operations while the instructor concentrates on teaching shooting skills. The Marin Council Shooting Sports Committee provides opportunities for Scouts to learn safe handling techniques of rifles while enjoying shooting at targets. In order to operate the ranges and provide these learning opportunities, we need certified RSO staff. If more staff are available, we can schedule more shooting opportunities. An NRA Rifle Instructor class is more extensive and will be taught at a later date. To register, visit the council web site. Contact Keith Angerman with questions. So that we may order class materials, we must have your registration by June 24. After June 24, fee will include additional cost for expedited shipping of class materials. Registration is closed after 6/30/2016.

Order of the Arrow
After a busy spring, Talako is preparing for a bit of a summer break. A Talako contingent will participate in OA National events and some of our Arrowmen will serve as staff at Cub Scout day camp and at Camp Marin Sierra for Boy Scout resident camp.
There was a lot of action on the Cub Scout front this past month with many more bridging ceremonies and a very busy time as we joined in at Family Fiesta. Talako is preparing for our Annual Summer BBQ and a well-earned Fellowship. We will be hosting the W3N Section Conclave over the weekend of the September 9. We hope that our Cubs will join us on Saturday, 9/10, for another day of fun with the OA in Vallejo at the Solano County Fairgrounds. Have a Happy and Safe Summer!

Wilderness First Aid
If you and your Scouts are attending a BSA high-adventure base--such as Philmont, Northern Tier, or Sea Base--or are planning your own high adventure in 2017, you will need to be certified in Wilderness First Aid and CPR. Wilderness First Aid is a 16-hour class held over two days.
Marin Council is offering a Wilderness First Aid class at Camp Tamarancho, Saturday and Sunday, November 26-27, 2016 (yes, this is Thanksgiving weekend). The cost is $125 for an ASHI certification card, which is valid for two years. The class will be taught by Bobbie Foster of Foster Calm.
On the Friday night before the course, November 25, from 6-9 p.m., we will offer a CPR certification class for any Scouts or Scouters who need it. The cost for the CPR class is $30.
Philmont requires at least two people in each crew (adults or Scouts) to be certified in WFA and CPR, but it's always a good idea to have several people in a high adventure trek trained in case one has to drop out.
Class size is limited to 24 people and interested Scouts must be at least 16 years old.

If your business is interested in being highlighted as a supporter of Scouting in Marin download the brochure and commitment form to learn more. How many days until September 17?
Every year, on the third Saturday in September, people join together at sites all over California to take part in the State's largest volunteer event: California Coastal Cleanup Day. In 2015, more than 68,000 volunteers removed nearly 1,143,000 pounds of trash and recyclables from California's beaches, lakes, and waterways. Families, friends, coworkers, Scout troops, school groups, service clubs, and individuals come together to celebrate and share their appreciation of California's fabulous coast and waterways. The event is part of the International Coastal Cleanup which is the largest volunteer event on the planet!

Drake Historical Celebration
Michael Von der Porten is former Scouter in Sonoma County and he has worked on Wood Badge courses at Tamarancho and with some of our Scouts at two National Jamborees. He is currently a volunteer with a committee that is arranging the celebration of the Drakes Bay Historic and Archaeological District--a new National Historic Landmark honoring Drake, Cermeno (who was there in 1595), and the Native Americans. The National Park Service staff is eager to have local Scouts involved, so he is reaching out to to see if your Troop or Crew is interested. Here is some of the info: The ceremony is at 10 a.m. near where the Muddy Hollow Trail reaches the coast. The date is Sat. Oct. 22, 2016. Plans are just being formed, but the park service would like Boy Scout involvement. This could be some setup, helping people get to their seats, maybe part of a flag ceremony (we may present the flags of the US, Mexico, Spain, England to honor their involvement in this history). For those troops and crews involved, it may be possible to have a presentation at a meeting in advance to inform them of this interesting, world-important, but local history.
