Triangle Speech Services is the private, professional practice of Judith L. Bergman, a licensed speech-language pathologist (SLP) who specializes in foreign accent and regional dialect modification and related communication skills. I offer customized, individual tutorials to corporate-sponsored and self-enrolled individuals who speak English fluently but with moderate to severe accents that create challenges and frustrations in the workplace.
A definition of cost (thefreedictionary.com) is "the amount paid or required to purchase" goods or services. Value is defined as the "worth, usefulness or importance to the possessor" of these goods or services. In short, cost is what you give and value is what you receive!
So in the last week I've had four inquiries, one a phone call and three emails from the contact page of the Triangle Speech Services website, that all began, "What are your fees?" The person who called had received the phone number from someone and hadn't even read the website at all. I said, "That's not a good first question!" For the latest inquiry, I responded with an email suggesting a time on the next day for a FREE thirty minute phone consultation and also gave hourly rates, both corporate pay and self-pay and said there were several programs of 7, 12 or 13 sessions. This person never confirmed, asked for a different time or called at the suggested time to find out more about the programs and to tell me more about his or her needs.

S.K. is a current client working on his assignment for Session #9 of the 13-session Compton PESL program. From India, S.K. speaks Telugu, Tamil and Hindi fluently and has studied English since age 7. He is a Technical Manager for a large, multinational corporation. Here are excerpts (with his review and permission) from a brief recorded interview and a follow-up email from him.
SK: "I found out about TSS from your articles in Saathee Magazine after I moved to the Triangle area. I heard from one of my friends that this type of training costs around $5,000! "
JB: "A lot more than what I'm charging!"
JB: "Were the phone consult and the Information Session and demonstration of your accent features (recording and mini-analyis) helpful?"
SK: "Yes, very valuable. They helped me to decide.The other thing that really helped me was that [_ _ _] (his company) sends me to colleges to do interviews, really good colleges like Carnegie Mellon. I know how much MBA courses cost and the value an MBA brings to someone's career. I also know the importance of good communication and the impact it can make to someone in middle management.
"In my company, employees who can communicate better, and demonstrate a clear understanding of clients' business problems and how they can be solved are paid more than employees with just an MBA degree.
"Anyone in my field, or any field for that matter, needs two things: clarity in thought and the ability to communicate so that people can understand you.
"So if I have to choose between getting my MBA vs. accent modification, I would highly recommend accent modification."
JB: Also, can you comment on the online practice format and on my daily feedback emails after I review your recorded practice?"
SK: "That helps a lot. I don't think I would have made this much progress without the online format and your daily feedback. And I know for sure that I'll be in a much better position in my career once I improve my communication skills."

What my client had decided was that the very low cost, comparatively speaking, and the value that he would receive by reducing his moderately severe accent and speaking with both greater clarity AND confidence would be his priority. His thinking is already very clear and his pronunciation of English is growing clearer with every daily home practice and twice-monthly in-person training session!
