Triangle Speech Services is a small company of licensed speech-language pathologists (SLPs) who specialize in foreign accent and regional dialect modification and related communication skills.

Engagement, like many words in English, has multiple meanings. at least seven. Two of these meanings describe emotional and energetic qualities that we see in our clients who make the most impressive progress in reducing their foreign accents:

  • Contact by fitting together as in a "meshing of gears" that propels a vehicle forward
  • Involvement, participation and commitment.

In this issue, you will hear from E.H., who managed a retail business in Russia and moved to the U.S. last year when she married her American husband.  She and her husband, who is a business owner, researched various programs and came together to her Information Session. M.H.  also shares his observations about his wife's progress, midway through the 13 session P-ESL (Pronouncing English as a Second Language) accent modification program.

E.H. comes to each session with a filled practice log, almost always exceeding the minimum recommended practice time of 60 minutes five days a week. In addition she is completing exercises in the Grammar in Use self-study workbook and actively listening to her digital recordings and repeating her long list of business vocabulary in her "audio reference book."  E.H. has "meshed" with the program materials and exercises and is totally "engaged" in her session assignments and already beginning to self-correct in conversation!

Highlights from E.H.'s "Midterm Interview"

How do you like the course?  "I like it very much. I realized that you can't do this by yourself. I have Russian friends who are living here a long time and their speech doesn't change."
"I like your step-by-step assignments and working with the extra drills and with the CD ROM."

What advice would you give someone who is thinking about doing this work?
"I really feel that practice pays off. It is very, very important to plan enough time to practice."

Comments from E.H.'s American Spouse

"My wife EH moved here from her native Russia last year. She had studied English for much of her life. After she completed locally available classes in ESL, we realized that she would need further improvement in order to continue her career path as a business manager in her new country.

"After conducting research we found Triangle Speech Services which utilizes specially developed programs to identify and reduce her accent features and improve her language. With regular one-on-one tutored classes and hard study in-between by my wife, who is only halfway through the course, she has made remarkable progress.

"We consider Triangle Speech Services to provide an excellent return on investment and would be pleased to recommend this fine program to any professionals wishing to bring their spoken English skills to the working levels required in a business environment."

Steps to Engagement
   1. Do your research! E.H. and her husband looked at several websites. They read some of our newsletters.
   2. Do not commit to enrolling without an in-person Information Session. E.H. and her husband, M.H., observed our sample teaching methods. After completing her screening tests,  E.H. tried out the interactive CD ROM.
  3. Review all the materials you receive. E. and M.H.  read the articles in her Information Packet. They listened to her screening sound file which we emailed to them and looked at the mini-analysis of all the accent features we heard in the two minute speech sample.
   4. Think about (a) the instructor's demonstrated knowledge base, (b) the appeal of the training materials, (c) your "comfort level" working with the instructor and, finally, (d) your commitment to doing the required practice consistently for the duration of the training program.
