Despite what you see on "Reality TV" Design Shows, creating a fabulous, functional space takes time.  These shows are not "reality" but "entertainment".  We interview the client to get inside their head, as well as many other processes, in order to take their intangible ideas and turn them into a tangible reality.  Of course, custom designs take time to make & all the moving parts have to come together like clock-work.  One client waited almost 2 years for the perfect mirror.

So one Monday I take a call from a guy in Miami asking for help with his new apartment in Dallas to be ready for him to move in that weekend.  After convincing me he was serious, I got to work.  I just wish I had made a video for MY OWN REALITY TV SHOW.

My 14 yr old son, Ryan, is a freshman (Ahh!) this year & in the Lake Highlands High School Band.  I am discovering that band (in Texas, at least) is the closest thing to the military as far as organization & discipline requirements.  To keep up with it all, I was grateful for GetOganized! suggestions below.  It has inspired me to organize school & personal papers & schedules in two 3-ring binders.  I hope you will be inspired as well!

     My Own Reality TV Show

Recently an out-of-town client requested a quick turn around for his new Dallas Uptown apartment.  4 days isn't long to shop & install even just a 900 sq. ft apartment down to the sheets, towels, etc., but I rose to the occasion and with lots of help, was able to delight the client when he drove in from Miami with just his furry, best friend, Dakota & his clothes.

It's great to start with a clean slate sometimes.  Often clients may have either a few pieces or all of the furniture they start a project with, either incorporating into a new look in an existing space or a totally new space.  In this case, using just the floor plan & consulting with this client via phone calls, a lot of texts & a few emails, I made a list & budget of all the items one needs to start one's life in a new city & a new apartment.  Then I made my list of retail stops that I would hopefully find what I am needing quickly.

It was an exciting challenge to select everything

for a client without their prior approval- (and I mean everything).  I selected the color scheme based solely on his preference for a "clean, masculine" space that would also work best in the backgrounds given- dark wood floor, white walls and exposed concrete.

My choices were narrowed down by the time constraint, which actually makes decisions easier.  I discovered that Z Gallerie, West Elm, Crate & Barrel only sell items you see in the store if they have back stock or unless they are on sale.  Also, to meet this budget, Bed Bath & Beyond, Home Goods, Pier One, as well as some famous designer items from Target fit the bill perfectly.  Thank you, Nate Berkus, for designing lamps for Target!  My first purchases came from Weir's where I hit the jackpot with this handsome, gray linen sofa, the bar stools and the black painted bed.

I wrapped up the shopping with closing Target down the night before the install, filling the last pockets of space in my SUV with 2 shopping carts of laundry & cleaning supplies, kitchen & bath set-ups, etc.  And on the 4th day, my assistants & I met the delivery truck, with all our vehicles full of small furniture, bedding, accessories and art.  We worked hard trying to get it all set-up before my client arrived.  When he walked in, he was quite surprised to find the empty apartment ready to call home.

Making my clients happy by making their lives better is the reason I do what I do...

"When you ask someone to do something most people think is impossible, you don't have very high hopes. I hired Dona to set up my apartment for an unexpected move from Miami to Dallas. I barely had time to find a place and the thought of getting it set up with my 20+ hour drive ahead of me was quite daunting.

Dona was able to fully grasp exactly what I had envisioned for my new apartment. Her attention to detail, work ethic, and honesty are hard to find in this industry. I walked in after my long drive with my dog, and open the door into my apartment with my jaw on the floor.  I wouldn't have changed one thing about my new apartment in Dallas."   Jared Husch

Organize Your Child's School Papers from GetOrganized!

Use these simple organizing ideas from Lorraine Brock to maintain order & avoid chaos in your home as another school year begins.

Temporary Holding Spot

This is a letter tray, basket, or box that resides near the child's backpacks or where they do their homework.  This is for old tests, artwork, report cards, or items that require parental action. Parents will either take action on the paper (by returning it to school, putting it in their Tickler file, etc.) or place the paper in the Year Long Spot. If children are old enough, they can sort these papers themselves and determine what goes in which area.

Year Long Spot

This is a large box or tub (1 per child) that holds all completed school papers requiring no further action. These papers are not sorted, but simply placed here for 9 months until the summer, when time for further organizing can occur.  At the end of the school year, these items will be looked at as a whole, purged, and sorted into 3 categories:

1.      Artwork - Store in a large portfolio (many smaller pieces can fit on one page) or an accordion portfolio divided by age/grade level. You could take pictures of the artwork, discard the originals, and make a photo album. Some artwork can be laminated and used as placemats for special family meals, or photos can be taken of each piece of artwork and uploaded for permanent online storage and/or made into scrapbooks.

2.       Everyday Papers - Important essays, tests, stories, and handwriting samples can be stored in a 10 x 13 manila envelope (1 per child per year). Using this one envelope gives you a threshold of what you can keep from the school year. Label each envelope with the child's name, year, and age/grade level. For long-term storage, purchase a plastic container and keep all the envelopes in this container from pre-school to graduation.

3.       Portfolio - Awards, end of year report cards (print out a copy of online report cards), letters of recommendation, state tests, log/track volunteer hours, can be placed in a 3-ring binder with sheet protectors (1 binder per child for pre-K - 12th grade). Utilize the binder materials as your child gets older for creating a resume, applying for scholarships or college, etc.

Permanent Storage Spot

The Artwork portfolio and Everyday papers container can be stored in the attic or garage and added to each year.  The Portfolio binder can be kept in the parent's office or somewhere else accessible where it can updated often.
