Congratulations to
Cars In Camera!

Many congratulations to Cars In Camera, our first client to achieve certification to the new ISO 9001:2015 standard (see our Toolkit article to the right for more information about this standard).

Based in Radlett, Cars In Camera are a small but growing company who provide vehicle transport and support services to the automotive, film and advertising industries.

We first began supporting them last August and were delighted when all their hard work resulted in them being recommended for certification this last April.

Well done Cars In Camera!!
If you would like any help, advice or support in relation to implementing the ISO 9001 Standard or preparing for a certification audit, do please contact us

Very well done to our training partners SGS who are now accredited by UKAS  to certify organisations using the ISO 22301 standard. (For more information about this standard see our article to the right). You can read more about this achievement in SGS's own article about it.

So what is UKAS accreditation? To create confidence in the certification process, in each EU country there is only one government appointed national accreditation body and in the UK this is UKAS.

When supporting our clients in implementing standards and preparing for certification, we work only with certification bodies, including SGS, who are accredited by UKAS (or the approved national body in other countries). This ensures that any system we develop and implement for a client is appropriate for their needs and approved by a recognised body.

To learn about why choosing a certification body that has UKAS accreditation is so important for organisations wishing to be certified to any of the ISO standards, see the section on the certification process on our Standards webpage and/or follow this link to  the UKAS newsletter on this subject.

If you would like any help or support in introducing any of the standards in our Toolkit or in preparing for certification for any of these, please do not hesitate to contact us

Much has happened since our last Newsletter, not least the achievements of our client Cars In Camera, our first customer to gain certification to the new ISO 9001:2015 Standard and also of our training / certification partners SGS, who have recently become one of only a small number of certification bodies in the UK to achieve UKAS accreditation to certify companies to ISO 22301, the standard designed to help organisations respond to an incident that may disrupt or threaten the day-to-day operations of their business.

For more about these Standards see our Toolkit articles below, for more about our client and partner's achievements and about why UKAS accreditation is so important, see our congratulatory articles below left

And of course we now have the result of the UK referendum on remaining in or leaving the EU, but if, like us, you have been recently bombarded by emails with opinions on this particular subject, you will be relieved to know that we are going to say nothing at all about it!
Our Toolkit - ISO 9001:2015

One of the most widely used standards, the international standard ISO 9001 focuses on ensuring the delivery of customer requirements and the continual improvement of the management system, operational processes and procedures used by the organisation, using a process approach.

It is based on Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) methodology and in its most recently published version, ISO 9001:2015, conforms to the Annex SL structure (explained on this page of our website), which will eventually become the structure for all management system standards as they are developed and reviewed, making them more compatible and easy to integrate.

When effectively deployed, it brings the following benefits -
  • Helps the organisation deliver products or services that meet customer needs
  • Helps the organisation address risks and opportunities in line with its objectives
  • A powerful clarion call for staff to deliver high standards to the business
  • Re-work & waste reduced - predictability increases & planning is easier
  • Qualitative & quantitative data from audits etc. help target process improvement
  • Logical & important foundation step on journey to 'best in class' and excellence
  • Supports other business models such as the EFQM Excellence Model
  • Staff confidence, pride and morale improves
  • Gives external recognition to your organisation
However, implementing a management system like ISO 9001 is much more than creating procedures and ticking boxes. It should change the whole culture of the organisation to look at business improvement and ensure that it can strive for excellence in the longer term.

Our Toolkit - ISO 14001:2015

ISO 14001 specifies the requirements for an auditable environmental management system that enables an organisation to develop and implement a suitable policy and set of objectives which address its significant environmental aspects.

Like other management system standards, it is based on Plan-Do-Check-Act methodology and conforms to the Annex SL structure (see our article on ISO 9001 above for a fuller explanation of this).

A properly implemented environmental management system not only establishes controls but builds into the culture of the organisation a system of continual improvement in environmental performance and has these benefits -
  • Helps the organisation deliver environmentally aware products or services that meet customer needs
  • Supports other business models such as the EFQM Excellence Model
  • Productivity can be increased due to reduced waste
  • Qualitative & quantitative data from audits etc. help target environmental improvement
  • Stakeholders know that it can give competitive advantage
  • Staff confidence, pride and morale improves
  • Gives external recognition to your organisation
  • Cost of utilities can be managed
  • Company image is improved
However, like all of the ISO management system standards, implementing ISO 14001 effectively requires commitment from the whole organisation, especially top management. Real business benefits will only be realised with the right approach.

Our Toolkit - ISO 22301

ISO 22301:2012 carries on from the British standard for Business Continuity Management, BS 25999-2:2007 and covers the international standard's requirements for Business Continuity Management, which, as previously explained in BS 25999-2:2007, "provides the capability to adequately react to operational disruptions while protecting welfare and safety".

Every organisation, no matter how large or small, needs to be able to ensure unexpected events do not result in loss of organisational capability, reputation or both. The type of events you may need to deal with are -
  • System failure
  • Facing the media in a crisis
  • Identity theft (including company identity theft)
  • Physical incidents e.g. fire, flood and storm damage
  • Loss of reputation
  • Fraud
  • Terrorism and malicious damage (including damage from within)
Properly implemented, ISO 22301 will help you plan for and deal with such events to minimise any damage and recover in the fastest possible time.

Like other management system standards, it is based on Plan-Do-Check-Act methodology and conforms to the Annex SL structure (see our article on ISO 9001 above for a fuller explanation of this).

ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 - transition for those already using older versions of these standards

The time scale for transition ends in September 2018. After this time, certification to the old versions of these standards (ISO 9001:2008 and ISO14001:2004) will no longer be valid and all audits will be to the new standards. If, unlike Cars in Camera, you are still working to the older versions of these standards, then the best way to avoid unnecessary cost and reduce any impact on your operational activities is to immediately start planning for the transition, if you are not already doing so, working back from the planned audit date for your certification or next re-certification. You will need a copy of the new standard, which you can obtain from ISO.

If you would like any help, training, support or advice during your transition, please do not hesitate to contact us. Even if you are still unsure, at this stage, what help, if any, you might need, do get in touch with us. We will be happy to talk it over with you and will only suggest you use our support if we honestly believe you need it.
Breaking news as we are finishing this newsletter - ISO 45001 the new standard to replace OHSAS 18001 will now go to Draft version 2 with a likely implementation date of October 2017.

Sincerely,

Graham Hull
