Think about it!
The concept of excellence

Some very famous people have had thoughts about the concept of excellence, as you will see from the quotations below.

What are yours? Contact us and let us know what they are.

"The will to win, the desire to succeed, the urge to reach your full potential... these are the keys that will unlock the door to personal excellence"

  Confucius

"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit"

Aristotle

"Be a yardstick of quality. Some people aren't used to an environment where excellence is expected"

Steve Jobs

Newsletter - September 2013
_________________________________
Greetings!

I hope you had an enjoyable summer. How good it was to actually have some decent summer weather in the UK for a change.

Here at ley hill solutions our minds over the past couple of months have been
very much on the concept of excellence, exactly what it means to be an excellent organisation and how to become one, hence the flavour of this month's Newsletter. This is because, with the winners of the 2013 UKEA (UK Excellence Award) due to be announced on the 17th October, we have, as usual, been helping the BQF (British Quality Foundation) in supporting the UK Excellence Award assessment process. We have an article below about this, whilst our regular Toolkit feature covers both the assessment framework used for the UK Excellence Award - the EFQM Model - and Excellence and Assessment Frameworks in general.

Ever extending our own skill and expertise in the application of excellence and assessment frameworks ley hill solutions has recently become accredited trainers/advisors to Hospitality Assured. Are your customers critical to the success of your business? And do you think you could improve the services you provide to them? If so, then Hospitality Assured may be just the thing for you  - see our article below for more information.
UK Excellence Awards 2013

Once again our consultants have been acting as lead assessors for the UK Excellence awards and we have been privileged to work with some great people both on our assessor teams and in the companies being assessed.

Graham Hull led the assessor team for JPCS who have been using the EFQM excellence model for several years and have shown considerable improvement in operating practices and their progression through the levels of excellence programme.

The photo below shows the assessor team ready to go out to sites and yes the Hi-Vis colours are important - Orange for those going to Rail sites and Yellow for those going to Highway sites.

 UKEA Assessor Team

The assessor team had a really interesting and informative week at JPCS and would like to thank everyone there for their support and enthusiasm for the model and assessement proocess. We wish them well in the future.

Tom McCormick led the assessor team for One Vision Housing who have been nominated as a finalist so we await the awards ceremony on the 17th October with interest.

Over the years ley hill solutions have been involved with many winning organisations and its great to see them progressing to the highest levels of attainment.

Below is a full list of this year's finalists for the UK Excellence Award

In addition to the UK Excellence Award itself, there will also be the following awards

  • The Achievement Awards, which are national awards for exceptional achievement. This year there are five categories - Customer Satisfaction. Employee Engagement, Innovation, Leadership and Sustainable Future
  • The Lean Six Sigma Award, which recognises exceptional performance improvement projects based on Lean Six Sigma
  • The BQF Gold Medal for Excellence, which recognises organisations with outstanding continued commitment to sustained excellence over a number of years

Click on these links to find out more about this year's Awards Ceremony and about the various awards, including, for all of them, a full list of 2013 finalists and previous winners.

Hospitality Assured

What is Hospitality Assured?

Hospitality Assured, the quality standard created by the Institute of Hospitality specifically for customer facing organisations, encourages them to look at their own operations from the customer's perspective and to see where improvements should be made. Although referred to as a quality standard, in 2003/4 it was remodelled on the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) excellence concepts and is more akin to frameworks like the EFQM Model and other excellence frameworks (see our Toolkit article below) than standards in the ISO range, such as ISO 9001.

Using a nine step standard (or framework), commencing with customer research and culminating in customer service improvement, it has helped organisations in many different sectors, including education, healthcare, local authority, facilities management, catering, hospitality and leisure.

How does it help?

It  can:

  • Improve quality standards
  • Improve leadership and management skills
  • Increase customer loyalty
  • Improve staff morale
  • Reduce staff turnover
  • Increase market share
  • Generate great PR
  • Develop service ideals, values and principles that support a culture of excellence

If you are interested in finding out more about how Hospitality Assured can specifically help you, please contact us. Our expert Andrew Penn will be more than happy to answer any questions.

Our Toolkit - Excellence & Assessment Frameworks

Since the early 1960s organisations have been striving to understand the secrets of success and distil their key elements into models or frameworks that can be used and adapted for all.

One of the best known of these frameworks is the EFQM Excellence Model. used by many organisations to improve the way they work, resulting in real bottom line benefits.

Since its creation in the late 1980s, it has also been used as the model of excellence for the annual excellence awards process in many countries around the globe, including the UKEA and EFQM Award, both mentioned elsewhere in this Newsletter, above and to the left respectively.

To learn more about how your organisition could benefit from using excellence and assessment frameworks, including the EFQM Excellence Model, use the links in this article and/or contact us

Sincerely,

Graham Hull
