What's happening at WORD?
|
| |
Jami Attenberg's launch party for The Middlesteins was standing-room only, and included dumplings, fortune cookies, and lots of local pride.
WORD and our staff came through Hurricane Sandy unscathed -- thanks to everyone who kept us updated on Franklin Street's situation during the storm, and to everyone who stopped by and checked in to make sure we were ok! We hope that you all are doing well, and our thoughts are with everyone who was affected.
Our November includes some pretty cool partnerships, in particular a three-bookstore party at Franklin Park. And how often do you get a chance to get a free beer with book purchase?! |
This month's featured event:
| |
Pre-order a book, get a free beer In this enthusiastic, heartfelt, and sometimes humorous ode to bookshops and booksellers, 76 authors pay tribute to the brick-and-mortar stores they love and often call their second homes. WORD is lucky enough to be included, thanks to a lovely piece from Kate Christensen! At the event, contributors Carmela Ciuraru, Matt Weiland, and Emily St. John Mandel will read from their essays about their own bookstore experiences, while attendees enjoy drinks and the camaraderie of fellow bookstore lovers. Customers can pre-purchase My Bookstore from any of the three participating bookstores and pick up the book at Franklin Park on the night of the event; each pre-purchased book comes with a voucher for a free beer to be redeemed at the event! You can pre-order here.

For booklovers of all ages: Sunday, November 11, 1:30 p.m. Benny's Brigade with Arthur Bradford and Lisa Hanawalt
Join us for an afternoon of art with Arthur Bradfrod and Lisa Hanawalt, author and illustrator (respectively) of the brand new picture book Benny's Brigade, the story of a very tiny, very polite walrus. Recommended for kids ages 5 and up; all ages welcome.
At recess one day, sisters Elsie and Theo spy a nut wiggling on the ground. Out pops Benny -- the world's smallest and most gentlemanly walrus. After the girls learn that Benny misses his home in the sea, they send him sailing in a milk-carton boat, along with a trusty band of adventure-seeking slugs. Together, Benny's Brigade (as they call themselves) begin their voyage to a truck-sized island paradise, avoiding the salt water as much as they can. Slugs don't like salt.

For makers and crafters: Wednesday, November 14, 7 p.m. Brooklyn Makers with Jennifer Causey
Photographer Jennifer Causey will give a presentation on Brooklyn Makers, which documents thirty of the borough's crafters. Several of the featured crafters will be on hand as well!
Brooklyn is home to a thriving community of artisans producing a remarkable variety of handmade goods. Causey's book covers a mix of established and up-and-coming makers, including bakers, ceramic artists, clothing designers, florists, distillers, and more. With an eye for small details, Causey's charming photographs reveal these artisans at work in their own spaces. Her interviews reveal what inspires them, what keeps them motivated, and their thoughts on the city where they live and work.
