St. David's Episcopal Church | The Rev. Frank Allen

"Here I am, Lord. Send me."
Isaiah 6:8
Dear People of St. David's,

I pray that you are well and are looking forward to this Labor Day Weekend. Labor Day, as many of you know, came about in our country as a day to celebrate the labors of the common person. A hundred years ago, the day was marked by parades honoring the hard work of all of us. The freedoms and way of life, which so many of us enjoy, requires all of us to offer our gifts and work to build our nation and community. Funny that Labor Day is now more "the unofficial end of summer," rather than a day to remember and honor all the work that goes into building a community like ours.

It takes all of us using our gifts and giving our best to build a nation, a company, a way of life, or a just society. But too often we think it is someone else's work and not our own. For some, passing on the responsibility to give our all comes because we have grown complacent with our particular lifestyle and choose not to give more of ourselves. For others, we pass on our responsibility for the betterment of the wider community because we're not sure where to begin or what kind of future we want to help build. For too many in our nation today, we are blocked from offering our gifts because we don't have the education or the opportunity, or because the current culture of racism blocks us and we give up.

God is calling all of us to offer the best we have in honor of Him and to help Him build a better community for everyone. You and I have been given gifts, abilities and interests that are important to offer to God and to His world. You know what they are (and if you don't, feel free to call me or drop by and I'll be happy to help your discernment). The opportunities to make this world a better place are before us every moment of every day.

So on this Labor Day weekend, let me encourage you to "Come, Labor On." Use your gifts and your life to help God build a better world for everyone. It certainly can happen at St. David's and I encourage you to offer your best to God here, at this church on a mission. It can happen in your family as you help one another become a community of love. It can happen at your school or at work or any place God leads you in your day to make a difference.

God is not done with us yet and we know we are not yet done with God's world. Answer God's call. He's sending you.

Grace and Peace.

Frank Allen
