In honor of Small Business Month, our May issue profiles Rustic Marlin Designs, which started out in a garage with an idea and some moxie. This month, Brian and Melanie O'Neil are moving Rustic Marlin and its 30 employees from their home operation to a 50,000-square-foot facility in Hanover, which will serve as their primary headquarters going forward. Report: Mass. nonprofits employ more than half a million people
More than half a million people in Massachusetts are employed by nonprofit organizations, accounting for 17 percent of the state's workforce and representing the sixth largest state nonprofit sector in the nation, according to a report released Tuesday by a nonprofit umbrella group. Read more here.

New rule allows small-boat scallopers to fish close to home
On May 3, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Fisheries Service released regulations that open the Nantucket Lightship Access Area to New England's small-boat scallop fleet. The area, which has been closed since 2014, is near Cape Cod fishing ports and will provide an opportunity for Cape scallopers to catch their quotas while coming home each night. Read more here.
