The Superintendent's Academic Achievement Award (AAA) promotes academic excellence and recognizes students who demonstrate exemplary  academic scholarship in grades 5-12. Students must maintain an A average for every course each semester, meet attendance requirements each semester and maintain an excellent discipline record in order to receive the award.
You can download the complete list of 5th-12th grade students from Texas City and La Marque that earned this achievement for the 2015-2016 school year.

The Academic Achievement Award recipients were celebrated at a dessert reception this week honoring their achievement.
Inductees named for 2016 Hall of Honor
The Texas City ISD Foundation for the Future has selected the four inductees for the 2016 Hall of Honor, which is a prestigious program recognizing outstanding Texas City ISD graduates.

"The Foundation is pleased to be inducting four more accomplished alumni into the Hall of Honor," said Deborah Laine, executive director for the foundation. "These honorees have distinguished themselves professionally with exceptional careers. They also have displayed selflessness through all of their volunteer efforts in their communities and abroad."

This is the 11th year for the Hall of Honor, in which four alumni from the district's high schools are selected for induction. The 2016 inductees are all from Texas City High School: Charles Hutchins, Class of 1955; Robert Gray, Ph.D., Class of 1964; Greg Johnson, Class of 1965; and Jill Grove, Class of 1986.

Charles Hutchins went to work at Union Carbide immediately after graduation. He honed his craft as a machinist before joining A& A Machine & Fabrication. With his partners, he developed one of the largest privately-owned companies in La Marque and one of the top manufacturers along the Gulf Coast. A member of the Commemorative Air Force since 1974, Charles was a founding member of the Wings Over Houston Air Show, which is the third largest air show in the United States. A man who leads by example, he encouraged his business and employees to take an active role in the community. He saw to it also that his business was the proud sponsor of many La Marque sports teams and booster clubs.

Robert C. Gray, Ph.D., is nationally and internationally known as a specialist in national security policy and defense analysis. His sharp analysis of the evolution of U.S. strategic nuclear policy has been held in high esteem in both the academic and policy realms. He is well-respected for his work in policymaking, strategic warning and attack assessments. Dr. Gray retired in 2015 after 43 years of service as a professor at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. During that time he served on committees such as the National Security Council Affairs in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. He also served as a consultant for the Congressional Research service regarding strategic weapons and arms control.

Greg Johnson, a U.S. Coast Guard Academy graduate, received many citations and merit awards during his 28 years of service to this country. He made significant contributions to both the Navy and Coast Guard while designing, building and delivering the newest and largest Ice Breaker, U.S. Coast Guard Cutter HEALEY. Upon retirement from his service, Captain Johnson had a very successful private sector career as a consultant with a ship design firm. He is a nationally recognized expert in the field of marine engineering, with a specialty in fleet supportability issues centered on effective and efficient fleet maintenance and repair.

Jill Grove, an American mezzo soprano is renowned for her distinctive dramatic voice and passionate artistry. Since making her debut with the Metropolitan Opera in 1999, she has won critical acclaim throughout the United States and Europe portraying the heroines of both German and Italian Opera. A sought-after concert soloist, she has joined many of the distinguished symphonies and orchestras in some of the largest cities in the country and Canada. The recipient of many awards, she has upcoming engagements at the Lyric Opera of Chicago as well as a leading role with Houston Grand Opera. Her repertoire is the largest and most demanding in all of opera.

The Hall of Honor inductees' photos and biographies will be displayed in the main entry of Texas City High School in honor of their accomplishments and to serve as role models for students. In addition, there will be an induction ceremony and banquet on Thursday, October 13, 2016, at the Charles T. Doyle Convention Center. The community is invited to purchase tickets to attend the dinner and silent auction. Individual tickets are $60 and tables of 8 can be purchased for $600. Seating is limited so reserve early.

There will be three others recognized during the Hall of Honor dinner. The Foundation for the Future will present the Visionary Award to Mayor Matthew T. Doyle for his idea to develop a shooting team at Texas City High School and then using his charity skeet shoot to fund multiple programs in TCISD. The Foundation is honoring TCISD Deputy Superintendent Susan Myers with the Distinguished Service Award for her exceptional longtime career in education. The final distinction is the Spirit of Education Award presented to Rich Hernandez for his leadership on the community advisory council that is helping bring the TCISD Industrial Trade Center to fruition.

For more information about the dinner or about the Hall of Honor, call 409-916-0108 or e-mail dlaine@tcisd.org.

Thanks for school supplies, Marathon

Marathon Petroleum employees from Galveston Bay Refinery and Texas Refining Division collectively donated more than $5,100 in school supplies for this school year to students in Texas City ISD. Marathon's Ruth Rendon said, "We are thrilled to be able to help students who may not be able to afford school supplies. I think we all remember the thrill of having new backpack, notebooks, folders, pencils and pens on the first day of school. Hopefully these supplies will give some students that same thrill."
