EIT awards given
The Elementary, Secondary and New Teachers of the Year each receive special awards through the TCISD Foundation for the Future. The Excellence in Teaching Award recognition was created in 2001 by Dan R. Dixon in honor of his brother Dr. Dennis O. Dixon, both 1962 graduates of Texas City High School. Dan wanted to recognize and reward the heroic commitment and dedication of TCISD high school teaching faculty with a cash award. He therefore established a fund to provide the cash award each year for teachers. The first recognition was made in 2002, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Dixons' 1962 graduation from TCHS. In 2006, the Excellence in Teaching Cash Award Recognition was expanded to support the addition of an Elementary Teacher of the Year. Finally, to complete the Excellence in Teaching Cash Award Program, the New Teacher of the Year award was established in 2007 and is funded by David Moss and Merrill Lynch. All of the funds are managed through the TCISD Foundation for the Future. Congratulations to Betazabeth Corral, Shone Evans and Russell Creel!

Debate & Journalism State Bound
By Darcie Papillion, TCHS Sting City Press

Most students are unaware of the fact that UIL is not just involved in sports, but academics as well. Students can compete in events such as mathematics, journalism, debate, ready writing, and computer science. All students attend practice competitions, known as invitationals, in order to prepare for district competition.

Once students place at the district level, they can move on to regionals and then state.

"In debate, I go to so many tournaments a year to prepare," junior Jakob Lucas said. "There are a lot of late nights and hard works, so I'm super proud to move on."

A member of the debate team has not advanced to state in over 20 years, therefore it's quite an accomplishment for Lucas.

"[I'm] proud and thankful for the people who have helped me get here," Lucas said.

Going to state for the first time is an achievement for those who have dedicated themselves to their craft.

"I think working on the school's newspaper and doing extra UIL training has given me a lot of preparation, as well as experience," sophomore Allison Eastep said. "It's a great feeling seeing all of it pay off in competition."

Moving on to state will take an extra amount of preparation, as the competition gets tougher.

"I am going  to rewrite my arguments from rounds at regionals," Lucas said. "I also will prepare evidence to counter common arguments from my opponents. It is hard work, and I have to read a lot of philosophy, but it is fun and worth it."

Eastep and Lucas will be traveling to state competition at the University of Texas at Austin on May 23.

"I feel very excited going to state, and just hope I'm able to do my best when representing TCHS," Eastep said.

Editor's Note: Both Jakob and Allison competed this week. While they did not place in the competition, they are both considered top 12 in the state for conference 5A.

TCHS' La Roe going to Harvard program
Texas City High School Principal Holly La Roe is one of 95 Texas principals selected to participate in a summer leadership program at The Principals' Center at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Raise Your Hand Texas, a nonprofit advocacy organization working to strengthen and improve public education, is sponsoring this event.

With this year's group, Raise Your Hand Texas will have sponsored more than 900 principals to attend Harvard in the eight years of the program. Raise Your Hand covers all expenses for those selected, including program tuition fees, travel, hotel and other discretionary funding - an average of about $7,500 per attendee, for a total of nearly $750,000 in sponsorships for 2016, and more than $6 million since the program's inception.

"Building strong campus leaders is one of the fastest, most effective ways to improve education for all kids in public schools across Texas," said Dr. Andre Morgan, program director for Raise Your Hand Texas. "With this year's cohort, Raise Your Hand will have sponsored more than 10 percent of all Texas principals to benefit from a rigorous weeklong program at the Harvard Leadership Institutes."

Attendees will join campus leaders from around the globe in one of the following six institutes, and engage in training and workshops led by national and international experts in the fields of education and leadership.

  1. National Institute for Urban School Leaders
  2. Improving Schools: The Art of Leadership
  3. Leadership: An Evolving Vision
  4. Closing the Achievement Gap
  5. Family Engagement in Education
  6. School Turnaround Leaders

Each Institute lasts for 5-7 days, between June 6 and July 28, 2016.

Congratulations, Ms. La Roe!
