TCHS band successful at Region contest
For more than 70 years the Texas City High School Band has maintained a rich musical heritage. Recently, 36 TCHS band students attended the annual Region 17 Band auditions located at Alvin High School, December 7, 8, 10 and 11. This is a four day process that involves a blind audition of three music pieces the students began working on in August. Five judges composed of local band directors judge the contestants behind a partition to preserve anonymity.
"I am extremely proud of our students and their courage and bravery during this process," said Head Band Director Matthew Raines. Our Region 17 is made up of only 4, Class 5A band programs. The Region Band the students audition for is composed mainly of 6A schools from our Region. Those schools include: Friendswood, Pearland, Pearland Dawson, Alvin, Manvel, Clear Brook, Clear Creek, Clear Lake, Clear Falls, Dickinson, Santa Fe, Ball High, Angleton and Texas City. The TCHS Band department continues in this rich musical heritage to maintain a new standard of excellence in becoming an Area level band with three students placing in the Region Band, one student placing in the District Band and 20 students placing in the Area Band.

Marathon donates for STEM at TCHS
Marathon committed $270,000 to the TCISD Foundation for the Future to implement a STEM lab at Texas City High School.
The Marathon STEM SmartLab will impact more than 1,850 Texas City High School students in grades 9-12 beginning August 2016. This program will be supportive of students in many ways, including those pursuing further education in engineering, those enrolled in the Industrial Trades Center programs, and those in general studies to support math and science learning.
This STEM SmartLab will provide an extension of curriculum for those students who enrolled in the Valero STEM program at Blocker Middle School. For those students not previously enrolled in the Valero STEM Program at Blocker this new lab will provide exploratory studies that will enable high school students to make an educated decision on future career paths.
Pictured, left to right, are Linson Landrum, TCISD Foundation for the Future President; Ruth Rendon of Marathon; Deborah Laine, TCISD Foundation for the Future Executive Director; Holly La Roe, TCHS Principal; and Courtney Ramirez, TCHS Dean of Instruction.

Prize Posse brings smiles and tears
Teachers are so enthusiastic about teaching that they often spend money out of their own pockets for projects to get their students engaged in learning.
Many projects are financially out of their reach. This is where the TCISD Foundation for the Future helps.
The Foundation funds innovative classroom programs through grants with money donated generously by industry, business, alumni, civic organizations and individuals. This month, the Foundation's Prize Posse surprised teachers with their checks with fanfare that included a drum line and Santa. Prize Posse awarded more than $142,000 to teachers. Here is a sampling of some of the grants that will be implemented this year in TCISD.
Every school in TCISD received grants: Calvin Vincent Early Childhood Center, $16,923; Blocker Middle School, $9,729; Heights Elementary, $15,153; Kohfeldt Elementary, $18,667; Levi Fry Intermediate, $12,075; Northside Elementary, $ 5,459; Roosevelt-Wilson Elementary, $5,505; Texas City High School, $57,772; and Woodrow Wilson DAEP, $720.
Here are just a few samples.
Roosevelt-Wilson 4th grade teacher Mary Monroe received $1,524 for "Living Our Science." Students will have a better understanding of the science fundamentals by applying the skills to actual experiments and demonstrations. This grant was named for Dunn Heat Exchangers.
Educators Geny Bolton White and Sharon Moore received $1,342 for their "Mobile Math" grant at Heights Elementary. This mobile storage cart will be full of a variety of math manipulatives for K-4 teachers to use to bridge concrete experiences to abstract reasoning. This grant was named in honor of Oiltanking.
Levi Fry instructional specialist Jane Blundell was awarded $729 for "Spilling Ink Writer's Club." This before/after school writing club will give students more opportunities to improve their writing skills inside and outside of school. Donor Waste Management supports this grant.
Nici Snyder, Kohfeldt Elementary instructional specialist, received $3,886 for the"Spanish-English Reading Connection" grant. This will provide multiple genres of books, engaging games, translated novels, and more for bilingual students. This grant celebrates donors Domac and SAMCO Capital Markets.
Northside music teacher Randi Rose was awarded $2,862 for "Rhythm Instruments for All." Donors HEB and IBI/Bay Architects support this grant. Funding will allow students to have their own rhythm instruments in class so they become better musicians.
Calvin Vincent pre-k teacher Amy Robeson had her "Write Out of the Box" grant approved for $3,291. This grant will promote simple, fun and developmentally appropriate fine motor skill activities to foster efficient handwriting skills and avoid potential handwriting problems. Donor Sprint Waste supports this grant.
Blocker Middle School instructional specialist Rhonda Oyakhire received $2,540 to fund hands on geography to enhance student learning through a yearlong foldable system that traces the development of the state of Texas and the early United States. This grant honors donors MattressLand and Synergy FCU.
Jenn Massie, art teacher at Texas City High School, is receiving a $4,642 grant to develop a photography class that will help students learn and apply the elements of art, principles of design and photography in their project pieces. The Mayor Doyle's Skeet Shoot supports this grant.
