Nominate for gifted and talented now
Texas City ISD provides a gifted and talented program for students who meet specific identification criteria. This program challenges students who perform or show potential to perform at remarkably high levels of accomplishment in the academic areas of mathematics, language arts, science, and social studies.
The process of identifying students for the G/T program will begin in November, 2015 and conclude in February, 2016 for Kindergarten nominees and May, 2016 for all other nominees. Kindergarten students will begin services in the spring, 2016. All other identified students will be placed into the program starting in the fall, 2016. Information is collected for each nominated student from multiple sources. Both objective and subjective assessments are used to determine individual academic eligibility. Measures that will most likely elicit the strongest student performance and ensure the fair assessment of students with special needs will be used.
Student nominations will be accepted by your school's counselor until October 30, 2015 . Students may be nominated by peers, teachers, parents, counselors, administrators, themselves or other interested persons.

TRE informational public meetings set
A Tax Ratification Election (TRE) informational meeting for the Texas City ISD community will be held on October 15 at 6:30 p.m. and again on October 19 at 7 p.m. at the Simpson Education Support Center, located at 1700 Ninth Avenue North. For more information, call 409-916-0114.
During the past five years, Texas City ISD revenue has declined from approximately $56 million to slightly less than $52 million while student enrollment has increased from 5,922 to a current enrollment of 6,405.
Expenditures have increased by approximately 6% since the 2013-14 school year. This is a direct correlation to the 6% increase in student enrollment the District experienced during the same time.
School taxes are made up of two parts: Maintenance and Operations (M&O) and Interest and Sinking (I&S-debt services). Taxes generated by the M&O tax rate fund the day-to-day expenses such as salaries, building maintenance, transportation, utilities and supplies. Taxes generated by the I&S tax rate fund the debt payments of the district, which includes the bonds passed in previous years to build new facilities.
What is a TRE?
A district that adopts a M&O tax rate above $1.04 per $100 valuation must have a Tax Ratification Election (TRE) to provide voters the ability to ratify the higher rate.
In August 2015, the TCISD Trustees approved an M&O tax rate of $1.17 in order to address the budget deficit. If the TRE passes, the rate will generate approximately $5.3 million in tax collections and State revenue combined. Due to the State's current funding formula, this will also trigger a recapture payment from TCISD to the State in the amount of $1.4 million. The adopted tax rate will result in a net revenue increase of $3.9 million which will balance the 2015-2016 budget.

Alice in Wonderland to open at TCHS
Texas City High School Theatre Department proudly presents "Alice in Wonderland" as the first fall production.
After Alice tumbles down a mysterious rabbit hole, she finds herself in a strange land where everyone is raving mad. With the help of a Cheshire Cat, an astute Caterpillar, and a righteous Humpty Dumpty, Alice must find her way home and discover who she really is. This is a darker, more faithful version of Lewis Carroll's classic tale that re-imagines the experience of Wonderland, and ends with an unexpected new twist.
Showtimes are October 15 and 16 at 7 p.m. at TCHS. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
Tickets are $5 in advance or with a reservation and $7 at the door. For reservation email Mrs. Davis. |

Sophomores offered free PSAT test
The PSAT/NMSQT will be given to sophomores at no charge on October 28. The first 50 freshmen that sign up for the PSAT/NMSQT will be charged a fee of $15 (no credit cards) and may sign up before or after school with Sue Madere in the Counseling Center. The deadline for freshmen to sign up is October 23, 2015.
The PSAT measures the critical reading, math, and writing skills students need to succeed in college and beyond. One of the benefits of the PSAT/NMSQT is that it gives the student an SAT advantage. The students need to arrive at school on time, have a good night's sleep and eat breakfast. The 2015 PSAT/NMSAT is the qualifying test that students must take to enter the National Merit Scholarship (NMSC) competitions for college scholarships that will be awarded in 2016. Students who meet published participation requirements, which include taking the PSAT/NMSQT in the specified year of their high school program, will enter NMSC competitions for recognition and awards. Information about NMSC programs, entry requirements, and scholarships to be offered in 2016 can be found at www.nationalmerit.org and at school.
