Storyteller visits Calvin Vincent Pre-K
This week, TCISD Calvin Vincent Early Childhood Center hosted a full day visit by Mary Jo Huff, a nationally recognized storyteller and author known for her special blend of humor that tickles and touches the hearts of all. She believes in the power of storytelling as a tool for developing early literacy skills.
"Today, with our knowledge of young children and brain development, we know that children need to hear stories, play with stories, retell stories and have fun with language," said Calvin Vincent Principal Susan Wilson. "Stories, finger plays, songs, movement, dramatic play and colorful visual aids improve children's learning and retention."
Mary Jo Huff is the author of seven publications and has written articles for several early childhood and storytelling publications. As a recording artist, she has produced a training video and four CDs, with a new CD new to be released in November, 2015.
Huff is one of the authors, and participants, of the Frog Street Curriculum currently used by Calvin Vincent. Students have had the opportunity to hear her stories, sing her songs, and watch her storytelling on the Smart Boards in their classrooms, but Tuesday they had the chance to see her in person and interact with her up close and personal. "All students were engaged and actively participated with her during her stories and songs," said Wilson. "They had an incredible time during every second of their visit with her, and were reluctant to return to their classrooms when their time with her was over."
Huff engaged students in many different stories and music and movement activities that were not only fun, but educational as well. She returned Tuesday evening for a family event that resulted in a full house. "Many children were reported as running off the bus begging parents to bring them back that night so they could once again see and hear the magic of Mary Jo Huff," said Wilson.
There were opportunities that evening for children to interact and participate in activities and stories, and many parents participated as well.
She relayed important messages to parents about the importance of putting down their cell phones and giving their children undivided attention when they have the chance, how to interact with and increase vocabulary and literacy with their child during mundane times such as sitting at a red light, and the importance of passing along family stories that are not written down anywhere and will be lost if not shared with each generation. She challenged every parent to share one family story on the way home Tuesday evening.
"This was an amazing opportunity to Calvin Vincent staff and students and resulted in what has been reported as, 'The best day ever!' by students and staff alike! My goal is to be able to bring her back to our campus again in the future," Wilson said.

Sophomores offered free PSAT test
The PSAT/NMSQT will be given to sophomores at no charge on October 28. The first 50 freshmen that sign up for the PSAT/NMSQT will be charged a fee of $15 (no credit cards) and may sign up before or after school with Sue Madere in the Counseling Center. The deadline for freshmen to sign up is October 23, 2015.
The PSAT measures the critical reading, math, and writing skills students need to succeed in college and beyond. One of the benefits of the PSAT/NMSQT is that it gives the student an SAT advantage. The students need to arrive at school on time, have a good night's sleep and eat breakfast. The 2015 PSAT/NMSAT is the qualifying test that students must take to enter the National Merit Scholarship (NMSC) competitions for college scholarships that will be awarded in 2016. Students who meet published participation requirements, which include taking the PSAT/NMSQT in the specified year of their high school program, will enter NMSC competitions for recognition and awards. Information about NMSC programs, entry requirements, and scholarships to be offered in 2016 can be found at www.nationalmerit.org and at school.
