10 Way to Reduce Family Stress.
by Nancy Mehlert, MS

As the new school year begins and your family settles into the routines for the school year, we encourage you to consider how stress is impacting your family.  Do your own stressors trickle down to have a negative impact on the rest of your family? Do your children's stressors trickle up to you?

The newest and most powerful stressor in life is the information age.  The explosion of information and our access to it is overwhelming. Distributed in real time, this constant, seemingly uncontrollable bombardment of communication, information, education,
and sensationalism has arrived, and our heads are spinning. Most of us never saw it coming, and it has changed our lives in good ways and bad. It requires us to examine ways to turn it down, turn it off and buffer ourselves and our children from it. It has compounded our stressors and is taking a heavy toll on our physical, mental and spiritual health, as well as the health of families and relationships.

Interested in stopping the madness?  Here are 10 ways to help yourself and your family to reduce the stress:

Nutrition Nugget
Arugula and Cucumber

by Nancy Mehlert, MS

As we roll into September, October and November in Texas, you will begin to see local farmers' markets and grocery store produce sections offering locally grown arugula and cucumbers.

Of all the foods we eat, few would disagree that vegetables are the most nutrient-dense, anti-inflammatory, detoxifying and hydrating food you can eat.  It is also worth noting that they carry no risk to speak of - no one has ever eaten too many!   So let's take a closer look at arugula and cucumbers since they are now in season and excellent choices for reducing inflammation and detoxifying the body.

Employee TIP of the Month

from Sandy Booker, Wellness Consultant:

My favorite healthy tip is that I cook every Sunday night for the week. I always grill chicken, sometimes steaks, and make meatloaf and chili for my family. I grill some vegetables and always have 6 sweet potatoes and hard boiled eggs, favorites for my husband. This helps me with time management because I'm prepared with protein to add to a salad for lunches, and healthy choices to keep me on track while on the go. This also allows me to work out after work, and then all I do is make some sides to quickly get dinner on the table.
