Under the Husk Premieres at imagineNative
Ohero:kon-Under the Husk, which documents the resurgence of the adolescent passage rites in the Mohawk community of Akwesasne, premieres at the imagineNative Film & Media Arts Festival, Oct. 20 in Toronto.
The 27-minute documentary follows the challenging journey of two Mohawk girls as they take part in their traditional passage rites to becoming Mohawk Women. This film offers a glimpse into these important cultural transitions, not as artifacts from the past, but as important elements of culture that should be reclaimed.
The film focuses on Kaienkwinehtha and Kasennakohe, childhood friends from traditional families living in the Mohawk Community of Akwesasne that straddles the U.S./Canada border. They both take part in a four-year adolescent passage rites ceremony called ohero:kon "under the husk" that has been revived in their community. This ceremony challenges them spiritually, mentally, emotionally and physically. It shapes the women they become.
The imagineNative festival is the world's largest presenter of Indigenous screen content. This year's festival is Oct. 19-23.

Supporting Tourism in Indian Country
Executive Director Shirley Sneve showed her support for tourism in Indian Country by attending the American Indian Tourism Conference (AITC), held in Tulalip, Washington, Sept. 12-14.
"We believe that nurturing national partnerships with mainstream organizations like the AITC can open opportunities for VMM to offer films that celebrate Native culture, heritage, wisdom, sacred stories and the storyteller. We are proud to support tourism in Indian Country," Sneve said. AITC is hosted by the American Indian Alaska Native Tourism Association. AIANTA's mission is to define, introduce, grow and sustain American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian tourism that honors traditions and values.
