Filmmakers Finish Training in Oakland
Seventeen filmmakers attended the 2016 Vision Maker Media Filmmaker Training in Oakland, California, earlier this month. While training covered a wide variety of topics, including procedures for finishing funded projects, deliverables, intellectual property rights and distribution options, for producer Ben Shors, "interacting with other producers was a key component" of the training.

As a 2016 VMM Public Media Intern, Edmund Frazer Myer (Chehalis Tribe, Cowlitz Indian Tribe and Musqueam Indian Band decent) attended the training as a part of his internship. "The most valuable thing was the connections I made through networking. I was inspired by the fact that there were so many other Natives (and non-Natives) that are interested in promoting awareness of my culture," Myer said.

Vision Maker Media staff Shirley Sneve and Charles Boots Kennedye presented, as well as N'Jeri Eaton from Independent Television Service (ITVS); Center for Asian American Media (CAAM) Attorney Peter Franck; CAAM Director of Programs Donald Young; Monika Navarro from PBS World Channel (WGBH); Timothy Harjo, President/CEO of Amerind Group, Inc.; Frank Blanquet, Chief Content Manager for First Nations Experience (FNX); and Dawn Devine, Regional Sales Manager for Alexander Street Press.
Cast Your Vote for the Sequel
PBS Online Film Festival Features
The Medicine Game: Four Brothers, One Dream
The 2016 PBS Online Film Festival, July 11-29, is a competition among 25 short films from public broadcasting outlets all over the country, and this year's slate includes a significant Native presence. The winner will be determined by online voting. This year's competition features one of the sequel films from
The Medicine Game: Four Brothers, One Dream. The four-part short film series is a sequel to the original feature length film released in 2014, which focused on older brothers Jeremy and Hiana. This series explores the lives of Miles and Lyle, their connection and assent to the top of the lacrosse world.

Since its launch in 2012, the PBS Online Film Festival has featured diverse films from PBS member stations, ITVS and POV. Starting July 11, viewers can once again watch, vote and share their favorites. This year's festival includes collaborations with a wide variety of public television producers, including the Center for Asian American Media, Latino Public Broadcasting (LPB), National Black Programming Consortium (NBPC), Pacific Islanders in Communications (PIC), Wisconsin Media Lab and Vision Maker Media. The PBS Online Film Festival has attracted more than 1.5 million video streams over the first four years.

Mark your calendar to vote beginning July 11; viewers can vote once a day.
Need More Filmmakers to Complete Archive Survey
Filmmakers, we need your help in assessing the state of archival media across Indian Country, a joint effort with ATALM. Complete our short survey.

Vision Maker Media is concerned that we are losing important documentation of Tribal history and culture due to the changing nature of media and digitization. Running a professional archive with proper storage, climate control, access and records is expensive, but there are basic steps that can be taken to prevent further damage to old media and keep it safe.

With funds from the National Endowment for the Arts, the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians and the Claire M. Hubbard Foundation, we have a Native Media Archives Guide that provides information on how to keep your archives safe.
