August 14 is Navajo Code Talkers Day
In 1982, August 14 was declared Navajo Code Talkers Day. People can take part in activities honoring the Code Talkers. Teachers can also use this day to share the history of Native American service in the U.S. military with titles like Way of the Warrior and Choctaw Code Talkers. Outside of the classroom, people can buy the home DVDs or can watch Way of the Warrior online.

Choctaw Code Talkers: In 1918, not yet citizens of the United States, Choctaw members of the American Expeditionary Forces were asked by the government to use their Native language as a powerful tool against the German Forces in World War I, setting a precedent for code talking as an effective military weapon.

25th Anniversary of Wisconsin Regulation Requiring Curriculum that Includes History of Local Tribes
On August 3, 1989, recommendations from the Ad Hoc Commission on Racism, the American Indian Language, and Culture became part of Wisconsin law. One of the statues stated, "As part of the social studies curriculum, include instruction in the history, culture and tribal sovereignty of the federally-recognized American Indian tribes and bands located in this state at least twice in the elementary grades and at least once in the high school grades."

To help instructors meet these requirements, a Teacher Guide was created for The Oneida Speak. The documentary was produced by Tribal member Michelle Danforth (Oneida).
